Hitch hiker/2/x thread

Thought I would give a little update on this topic. I just couldn't resist so I recently purchased myself a HHX from Richard. After giving it a good workout on 2 Fir removals (8 hours in the saddle on one) I am glad to report that it is a killer device. Is it better than the HH2. Nope, but it is every bit its equal. They obviously have more similarities than differences and you really cant go wrong with either.

Hahaha... The temptation was too much, aye? Probably the same temptation I'm feeling towards the HH2/Pulley combo..

Soo.. after a bit a mucking around with it a bit... ability to add a pulley aside, what are you noticing different as far as useage.

Also, are you using it apples to apples.. same hitch, same HRC, same km3 or htp?

Are you using the ring or Swivaeye?

I noticed trying a 24 stand vs my smooth drenaline, resulted in my hitch grabbing more reliably without having to go as tight with tying. However grabbing was an issue i was having originally & if this was never an issue for you it may be a moot point.

I'm just thinking of the knots cinching down.. you get it tight, weight it, then you end up chasing the "sit back" of the knot.. shit.. I'm having a brain fart.. what's that called.. Creep? Setting?

Just wanted to make sure only tightening one side wasn't the reason behind certain issues..

Also.. anyone still use the rubber hose trick? I'm finding it kinda/sorta helpful.. it's deff something you gotta work with to get right, in my opinion.

I stopped using the "hose trick" and went totally to Brocky's KnutH — minimum "sit-back", easier to tie and tends much better — IMO. (y)(y)

Brocky's knut h is a badass hitch. I've gone back to it myself after using a straight valdotain for a while. I've also realised that I now have too many multicenders, and too many ropes, hitches, hitchcords, combos... in the sense that I keep switching between them and I am not getting the full experience of any one device on any one rope combo. I have found that the hh2 hitch used will act significantly different depending on how worn the hitch cord and rope is. I know thats probably really basic to many people, but I had to realise for myself that the setup I developed with a brand new rope and old hitchcord wasn't working so well with the new cord, or vice versa. I think it is much more sensitive to this than a mrt system.
In the spirit of continually trying new things before perfecting the old ones, I will be trying a michoacan on the hh2. It kinda blows my mind that no one has posted about trying that yet. It works just fine in my living room. Too much bucket truck work lately, but I should get some climbing in wednesday and thursday. Maybe even friday.

A Michoacán is the only hitch I will run with a Wrench or hitch climber system so I have spent a fair amount of time trying to get it to work for me with the HH2. Unfortunately I just couldn't get it to work the way I needed it too. YMMV of coarse.

I really had to fiddle around with the legs to get equal pressure before it would act good in ground level testing. I could see it getting uneven again after weight and cycles.

Yep. I dont think the Michoacán is very condusive to the HH. I have found that both the HH2 and the HHX work best with a very simple hitch like the original HH hitch. Find the amount of wraps that work for you (3 for me), get it properly set, and go get some fucking work done!! Simplistic beauty.

I tried the Michoacán on the HH2 & HHx. It worked 'ok' but not as good as the KnutH. Also, it was a little bit harder to tie and untie. KnutH for the win! IMO

A single eye version of the Knut H makes a good replacement for the Blake’s, for an end of rope hitch.

It tends one handed without additional hardware and will descend on a stationary line. And if you replace the stopper with another eye it’s the Element Hitch.

I'll be trying that, TODAY! Thanks, Brocky!

You are an amazing resource for this community Brock! Thanks buddy.

Thanks for the update SJ.
I had the tube going for a bit.. although it's an added peice you need to have, i think it worked pretty decent in my opinion..

Although i love capital-B's endless contributions, I unfortunately couldn't seem to get the Knut-H working for me.. it's either to tight or too loose.. Just can't seem to find that happy medium when using it. Not with the cordage/cordage combos i tried anyways..

I use a Micho exclusively on every other device.. lanyard.. climbing system.. everywhere... It never fails to work how i want it & if it did it's easy to manipulate without untying it. However after hours upon hours of just short 20ft up & down jaunts & not much actual "work work" with the device yet.. I'm finding the same as well.. that the simplest version is now working well for me (original HH hitch, but 5 wraps).. Honestly the biggest difference i found regarding getting reliable grabbing without being too tight to effortlessly tend, was switching out to different rope. It's odd because I've never experienced any of these issues while using my drenaline with other devices. It's usually my go to... I have some HRC coming because i think it's fuzz factor will help catch with the Drenaline.. who knows.. maybe i somehow glazed that 20ft section of drenaline & it's just acting funny for me with all these hitches... who knows.. all i can say is i changed to 24 strand & engagement issues went away.

(Side note - To anyone who has jumped this far ahead, there's lots of good reliable info all throughout this thread.)

Today, I tried the One-eyed KnutH or Open-Enzyme on a second tie-in. I worked beautifully … much better than a Blakes.

I still, much, prefer the KnutH on the HH2, though

I finally picked up a couple of Quickies, the cheaper cast ones. They are okay seemingly on the original HH. They did bind up a bit when they unweighted the reweighted behind the body of the HH. 8mm Beeline, Knut 4 wraps, dreamy.

I'm gunna have to revisit that KnutH & get it working for me.. I'm pretty sure (as weird as it sounds), my issue was cordage related..

I also dug down into the belly of the old school beast today & tried some cord/hitch combos using 16 strand. As i expected, things seemed to grabbed/engage even better with the even bumpier cordage.

Just out of curiosity Tom..
Did you try it without the second quickie in there? Is there a possibility that the tending loop is causing the link to bind against the spine if the HH?

In all honesty Tom, i don't think these tools are made for underwater scuba use.. you attempting to deep six them there?;)

I like to use the Double-d-Rope Technique (DdRT … {MRS - for the MFGenZ's}). I've been using a Blakes. But, Brocky posted a variation of his KnutH Hitch, which is also an Open Enzyme Hitch. It's an open system that can be tied with the tail of the rope — no separate hitch cord. It grabs reliably (so far), tends better (so far), and doesn't lock-up (so far). I'm liking it (so far).

The pic compares the Blakes to the One-eyed KnutH:Blakes vs. Open Enzyme copy.jpg

Cool! Did you spend much time on it yet? Just wondering if the hitch tail works it’s way out at all like the taughline/ midshipman’s always did.
Blake’s always pretty much stayed put, but put a stopper on anyways. Taughtline the stopper was very necessary.
