Helping replant in Goderich Ont after the 2011 f3?

Hey guys, little favor to ask. I am still pretty new around these parts, hope this is in the right section.

So last year, my hometown in Goderich Ontario was hammered by an F3 tornado, and a short while after a couple of my buddies put a group called the "Goderich Trees Project" together, and to date we have planted about 110 trees on private property. But I digress...

United Communities Credit Union is opening a branch in town, and they are celebrating by having a contest on facebook, whomever gets first place in votes (you can vote every 24 hours) gets $10000 for their cause, second place gets 5 grand aswell. We are in the final 4 and it only takes 20 seconds to like MyUnited on facebook, then like it up.

Also buddies over at the edge fund, whom have been helping us out insanely matching all donations 1:1. So if we get first place, that's 20 grand in trees we are looking at. (at about 200-450 per tree)

Any help from you fellow arbs would be greatly appreciated. Investing in a bunch of Canadian's trees. I know its a little dirty asking for votes, but there isn't much for tree education in the area, and I am betting a bunch of arbs like you guys would understand.

I voted again. I would encourage others here with FB accounts to vote for this project. It seems like a great way to help a community replace trees lost in a devastating storm.

Little more info about us;

We recently partnered up with ReTreeT America, with Greg Hill from Maple Hill Tree service in the GTA and Grady McGahan from Texas. What we are putting together is hopefully much bigger than our Spring plant from this year. Being that we are so new out of the gate with a program like this, and training mass amounts of volunteers, they decided to help us out.

Our Spring plant was made up of trees left over from Landscape Congress in Toronto Ontario (55 roughly) and the rest donated/bought trees from a local nursery, Baker's. Being the only arborist in the GTP until ReTreeT came out to help us, a lot of people asked my advice, but what I found out (I now have cynical teacher syndrome, haha) people like to pick and choose how they plant trees. We wound up doing a full day of quality control and in some cases replanting of the trees after the main group of volunteers went home. Trees Ontario was also a huge help in setting everything up and helping with demonstrations.

Any support from you guys helps beyond words. Even if anyone is in Southwestern Ontario mid November and wants to help out, send me an inbox and I will hook you up with some details.

You got my vote!

As an aside, if the losses are that severe, one option that may work on some trees is to leave stumps and train the sprouts. Not typically recommended, but this does not sound like a typical situation.

Sprouts often grow reeeeally well, given that the roots are left intact by tornadoes. Faster restoration of the urban forest.

Yeah Robina, there is only 3 or 4 trees left on the square from before the tornado. Luckily the carvings survived, the town is planning their big replant this fall after first frost. Pretty keen to see what it's going to look like.

Hey guys, just a followup and a thank you to those who voted.

We got first place! Easy 10k worth of trees, and to top that off. Our partners at the Edge Fund offered to double money raised 1:1, so that's 20 grand in trees!

Things are going way to well lately. Knock on wood!

Thanks for the link too Boreality!
