Helmet Comms ?

I know Sena seems to rule but has anyone tried any other brands? I've seen a few very similar products on amazon with much better price points. Just checking to see if anyone has had some first hand experience with any.

Thanks

After running Senas for a couple of years, We switched over to Speak Easy. Alex has been easy to deal with. Connection has been far simpler and staying connected has been better as well. Also, it has better noise cancelling. We are running 6 units on our system.

I have not but IMO when there is a product that stands out and sells the most odds are that is your baby.
That or there is a distributor who has very good retail penetration into the tree care market. There may be viable alternatives that are not advertised as well.

(....the people at the Sena booth at TCI Expo told me talk to Sherrill to purchase units...for whatever that is worth. Nothing against Sherrill - but they are very good at marketing!)

Has anybody found alternatives that do not require earmuffs? I know there are some ear plugs that can be used as headphones while providing adequate protection, but anything that works with these communication systems?

we are great fans of walkie talkies with earphone and voice activated,no more headaches from bluetooth devices, failing a lot in urbanized areas.
mind you we dont use phones during work
That just sounds too simple LOL!
Any that you have found better than others?

I tried walkies with ear pieces before getting sena. Although ours was push to talk, I often found the cords would get snagged and pull your ear piece out even with the cord routed under your shirt, the channel knob would get bumped and changed, and only one person could talk at a time.

One of the best things about the open communication of the sena units is that one person cannot tie up the airways preventing you from alerting them of a danger that you see.

Sena systems work great, and they are a game changer. However, they have a large button on the top of the unit that when bumped, cancels your connection. Hit it again, and it may or may not reconnect. Also, when we used 3 units we had few connections problems. Add the fourth, and invariably it would split the communications so we had 2 groups of 2.

Speakeasy is a newer company that has tried to address the gaps in the Sena system. His mike is better with a cup design for better noise cancelling, and we like the fact we can have up to 6 on at one time.

It sound like I am advertising for him...that is not the case, I am just a happy user.

The Speakeasy mike comes with a sticky pad to connect to the bottom of the earmuff...That may work for some, but we installed ours similar to how TreeStuff installs the Senas.

This problem should soon be solved, at least in part keep your eyes open, in the next few months there should be, paperwork pending, a guard on the market to protect this button. Its in trials right now, and so far has been very well received. http://www.treebuzz.com/forum/threads/sena-jog-dial-protector-prototype.40846

I'm not familiar with speakeasy, does it work on bluetooth like sena and if so can the devices (sena and speakeasy) speak to each other?

I sell the sonetics systems and while the company is a bear to deal with I am great. I have been using them for over two years and found them superb. They are an industrial system that comes with industrial quality. Ours have been used and abused daily for well over two years and have never missed a beat. When they needed repair it was minimal expense ($150) and they were back to brand new. The firmware is updatable and the connectivity is a snap. Connecting to two or more base stations is quite easy as well.

The team at Selner Tree has been using SENA for some time. We tried the Cardo's but even after multiple firmware updates they just didn't have the clarity and distance the SENA's have.
Arbsession does installs of SENA and we should be stocking a fairly large line up soon. The new 30K with mesh will be interesting. It would be so nice to sync an entire company. Then anyone can drive up to any job site and be instantly talking. It would be a huge advantage for sales reps entering a job site.

or disadvantage to crew member who doesn't realize bossman showed up ;)

Hahahaha.. yup.. the motor mouth on the crew always gets the hot mic moment..lol.

As far as these units go, I'd love to see a less expensive alternative for our line of work.. Something without all the silly bells & whistles that are really designed for recreational purposes & people who can't live without music or phone.
Most importantly.. a unit that actually has the range it advertises.. The Senas I've used haven't even come close to reaching the range they advertise.. & that's with a clear line of sight. 900yrds clear / 300yrds in Urban environment.. chyeah.. try 100yrds MAX, on a good day, with a full charge & as long as you don't lose sight, walk around the corner of a house or need to move a truck out on the street.
