Has anyone noticed Lava/Tachyon acting 'slick'???

Has anyone noticed Lava/Tachyon acting \'slick\'???

Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed on two different occasions, gear that I'm familiar with and use a lot seems faster on Lava. Since Lava is pretty close to 1/2" dia, it should be a little 'draggy' through Grigris, etc. But it seems to me to be faster than say PI or Velocity.

Anyone else notice Lava or Tachyon feeling fast?

Re: Has anyone noticed Lava/Tachyon acting \'slick\'???

Maybe that's it. Hmmm, I don't think of my Lava being that new, but maybe it's still got some 'new' in it - on it???

Re: Has anyone noticed Lava/Tachyon acting \'slick\'???

hey Ron, I've kinda noticed this too. I use velocity and Tachyon on regular basis. I also have a PI that I break out every once in awhile.
I think this may be due to the firmness of the Tachyon (noticeably firmer than Velocity & PI) and how it seems to keep it's shape better than the other two. Being lightweight might help alot too...

Re: Has anyone noticed Lava/Tachyon acting \'slick\'???

Velocity is my first pick then Lava with PI right on it's heels. Velocity is one of the best ropes I've ever climbed on. I didn't like that 'wax' at all, but I washed it a couple of times and started using it and it seems just about perfect now. The stuff only weighs 5.6 lbs/100'.

I bought the Lava because it doesn't milk, but my Velocity quit milking long ago so that's not an issue for me any more.

Has anyone noticed that the Lava does milk? I have had problems with my 200' double spliced bunching up under my hitch. If on short climbs it all gathers in the middle of the rope but when I get on a tall climb it will clear up 15 - 20 feet from the end. Our crew has 2 (possibly a third) ropes doing this now. Any thoughts

Re: Has anyone noticed Lava/Tachyon acting \'slick\'???

I don't have any helpful thoughts I'm afraid, but from the very start, I wondered how it would be possible to build a double braid rope - a slick braided rope inside a slick braided cover, that wouldn't milk. Maybe my suspicions are coming true.

Hay Ron, I asked a Guy named Ron how the Rig did on Lava and he said "great, but it is lightning fast!"

I think that lava is fast, but I don't have any real good line to compare it to. (just yellow jacket and true blue)

Maybe you can ask Ron about this this, he might shed some light on it?

Re: Has anyone noticed Lava/Tachyon acting \'slick\'

I think it all has to do with the third core. With the third core, the rope stays rounder under load, where are velocity or PI change shape somewhat while under load, which creates more friction when running through various hitches and devices.

As for Tachyon milking, yes, it does milk, but only to an extent. For example, my Blaze that I've climbed on maybe 15 times has milked between 1 and two feet. Where as one of my Tachyon's that I've climbed on since last year has only milked between 4 and 8 inches, if that.

Re: Has anyone noticed Lava/Tachyon acting \'slick\'

There is a difference between the feel of Tachyon and Lava. Very subtle, but Tachyon tends to get "fuzzy", while Lava seems to have a slick feel to it longer than a normal "break in" period.

In past discussions on Tachyon/Lava, this has been attributed to the way that the rope reacts to the dyes used. Can't recall who postulated that theory.

If I have a choice, I would go Tachyon over Lava.

The different color dyes can cause subtle differences in rope. Or so I've been told by folks from NE Ropes.

Re: Has anyone noticed Lava/Tachyon acting \'slick\'

When the different color patterns are chosen the engineers determine how many fibers are needed in each pic to result in a rope that performs the same across the brand.

Some colors are 'weaker' than others so more fibers needed to be added to make up the strength. That can change pic diameters that will then change performance. The differences can sooooo subtle!

Re: Has anyone noticed Lava/Tachyon acting \'slick\'

My 120 Lava has milked a few inches in a years time.
It is spliced on one end. 150 Lava has remained super tight spliced on both ends. I have been very happy with both ropes!
Beats the hell out of Safety Blue my old favorite.Just breaking in a 150 Tachyon feels pretty slick.
