Hands turning dark/purple

The principle I based my possible experiment on may be a no-go.

The phrase arterial pulse was nagging me so I started digging. I found this quote out of a pulse oximetry paper:

"Pulse oximetry is a photoplethysmographic method for determining heart rate and the percentage of oxyhemoglobin in arterial blood that allows you to objectively evaluate arterial hypoxemia and can be used in functional diagnostics and in the daily practice of interns of any specialization."

My read of arterial hypoxemia agrees with my intuitive plumbing gotcha. 1) arterial blood is being sensed 2) No matter how slow or restricted the arterial flow is, it constitution vi-a-vis oxygenation doesn't change - until it becomes venous blood which (isn't ? still some doubt in my mind) sensed. Ie the device reads oxygenation level as coming out of the lungs - still a valued and critical diagnostic tool. So this blows my intuitive principle out of the water - slower blood flow = less oxygenation. :(


I'm curious now so I'll dig further.

edit - venous blood is read but as a non-pulsatile constant that cancels out
- somthingorother leads to blood shortcircuiting into the vein, pulsing the vein and effing up...
- circulatory anomalies eff up this tech :(

Read the interaction with blood thinners - in case your vasoconstriction gets counteracted by blood thinning by your doc.

The oral side effects read like the Simpsons episode! Giantism, dwarfism, headache, nausea, explosive diarrhea, constipation, blindness, death - well, it was a funny episode - spoofing all those fine print tv ad warnings.

More seriously there's a distinction - SaO2 is measured oxygen level in blood, SPO2 is oxygen level as given by pulse oximeter and the from-source(lungs) level is I think termed arterial but net oxygen level including venous concentration is lowered by overall slower blood flow hence the purple. This is because of longer dwell time in the tiny capillary vessels sucking out a higher amount of the available oxygen. Same arterial O2 but lower venous O2. Hence the chance of thinning therapy to speed up the flow.

I have some actually. I'd used it for my nerve pain after breaking my neck. I didn't think of it for anything other than pain. I'll read into it more.
