Handbuilt Ascender

That stout may have clouded your judgement, I don't think that ascender is going to work.:endesacuerdo:
That's what I was thinking...I would have made it out of metal...maybe aluminum foil. Cardboard is just going to get so soggy in the rain.

Something I found about a straight handle like that on my OAR, was It is easy to hurt your thumb joint as you push up with that style of handle, if your knuckles are towards your body.

I was thinking more like pullups with my hands the other way round, will be trying it next week.

Apple has a high strength, And been talking to friend about lignum vitae, might try and get a piece fine tuned to fit neatly into the triangle, that would be a great grip shape.

Ok so here is something quick. The handles would need offset hole, and a hinge point above the carabiner hole. I hope this is enough to get the idea across.View attachment 29772

U channel might be a good idea for the arms (thought I would flip yours around and sand and buff the corners for comfort. You could makes those "grabber spikes" at the end pivot at the ends and hid within the handles, and have a slic pin lock them in place when they are to be used for tree transfers. Just a thought

By the way, I have never used a grapple hook in the trees before.....but have always wanted to pull the trigger on a good one after I saw Reg using it on some tall doug firs in a video. It would work great on the white pines here in Ny. So I am kinda inspired to make a good one that works as a multitool

Mike, me too. Grappling Hooks are so cool. I have also wanted one ever since Reg's video.

I'm not positive, but I don't think the mini hooks will work well. It will always be a guessing game if you're secure or not.

Oh no, I wasn't thinking of using one of these mini hooks to traverse like Reg...I just want a pocket grappling hook too...for some other use. I was thinking of maybe integrating it on the throw line scale. Maybe using it to retrieve a bight of rope or something like that.

This thread seems to be changing topics...

Bummer that Wesspur isn't carring the rock exotica one, I've been eye balling it for years.. Treewill (I think that's his name here) used a grapple that is a single hook. I can not remember who makes it but it looks slick. It seems like it would be a little trickier to use, but you could have more of a chance to retrieve it on a bad throw. Also it looks to be more tree friendly.
I haven't used one either, but I've thrown a monkey fist coil into a tight crotch to swing over. It was sketchy but it was one of those very rare occasions where it would work.

Not really a change off topic, Its all about the swiss army climbing tool.

I think the way forward is a 3 pronged affair, the 3rd one being something hidden.

maybe a tube could be the answer, like the small one off ebay, but bigger, handles on the sides, tapped holes and a screw off base for the grapples, the list could go on and on...:)

Paul, you stole my idea. I was about to google aircraft carrier anchor. Lol. This is why I love the buzz. You guys have amazing talents besides tree work. Hobbies are cool. Mine is work! I can't manufacture revolutionary gear but I did go to culinary school and can whip you up some tasty treats paired with a great micro brew while you innovate! Great thread. I will step back into the shadows with the mere mortals. (slowly walking backwards)
