Handbuilt Ascender

Ya I just spend a chunk of change on the front wheel hubs/bearings on my truck, should be working on Friday not going to Ian's but... hope to see you there Eric.

It'll be fun. I've got plenty of chores too but I'm going to take the opportunity to share and learn with you guys.
Just got a call from the garage and it's looking good so far. Routine stuff remaining so hopefully they don't find anything unexpected.

This is getting rad! Open source gear manufacturing. And this is only the beging of so much more, I see it down the road...
Right on, Evo! Open source is about the best way in my opinion. So many ideas coming together and there for everyone to read and share. I love it!

I've been doing/using OS since '91 - in the software/IT world, and I love to see the same principles in play in other areas of life.

Without this thread, these thoughts would never have come to me, from college 'design is an explosion in reverse'

I want to share this image, because in principal it would do the same thing, using just one piece of equipment, but all that is needed, is a drop nose pin for the rope grab to secure the grab, to make the install midline. You put it on your line above you, and pass the tail end of your rope through the eye of the rope grab, that way you can use it as grab handles.

tuttle, I like this idea! I was actually thinking of a similar concept, but rather than using a rope you would use a short rod to insert horizontally into the grab. But neither of these would replace the sweet compact setup Oceans has developed. Who doesn't want a Leatherman-like tool that allows you to climb a rope like spiderman:spiderman:?

I think solid wider handles allows for less strain on your grip and reduces fatigue. I do like having many options though, and I like the minimalistic approach of the rope grab.

My first thing is that nothing else is needed, so after you have used it, it disappears.
I have been thinking of a rod....these are my ideas:
1.BMX handle bars, but smaller, BMX grips, (did a search and they have started making BMX handlebars out of oak!)
2.Plastic heat shrink over rope.
3.Fitting a short tube in the eye of the grab, made from alloy, so you can then put tubes over that which lock in place.

Spidermen club :)

Actually something just came to mind, if we had a bar in the top rope grab, and a bar with footloops on a lower one (foot ascender), we then have a double step ladder, full reach, a good ascender is needed for the bridge.

So I just worked on this last night. I am surely not quite satisfied with it so I am going to regroup some thoughts, use titanium and make many changes for comfort and ease of use....yet still a little progress : ) Can be used like Kong hand ascender, 3:1 haulback, double handled ascender, grapple hook for transfers. Like I said, it is just a start.

Mike, did you do all the art direction for the film 'Dune'? LOL! Nice job, man. Please don't throw that at me!

And with the top attachment point, it could also be a knee ascender if the bungee is stout enough....these things.....they please me, LOL. Wish I had fabrication tools! I would totally take a stab at this "swiss army ascender" design collective.

Nahh it's so not Dune, It's more Beyond the Thunder Dome... It needs a bobble shrunken head key chain ornament hanging from it! Now just do a bottle opener cut out some where along the shaft of it..

So what y'all think about making the handles out of some U channel stock? Aww damn... I'm going to have to bust out the cardboard to make somthing to show and tell... I can't describe it right now.

Ok so here is something quick. The handles would need offset hole, and a hinge point above the carabiner hole. I hope this is enough to get the idea across.2015-01-09 21.43.03.webp
