Tom, I think you are at least on the right track. When I crushed the leaves and young seed, it had the unmistakable smell of walnut. Thought I didn't notice any staining when I rubbed it on a nearby picnic table bench.
I think later in the spring I'll be able to look at "mature" leaves to see how they are shaped, and see how the fruit shapes up, to get a good ID on it.
can I change my answer? I'm going with english walnut (shouldn't look a pics so early in the morning). You could get good and sweaty, and let some sawdust sit on your skin for awhile, if it burns it's probably a juglans of some sort. Any else get this?
Yeah juglans regia/english walnut! The best tasting eng. wlnts. i've ever had were in california. We'd be out on a job, and you could just give them a tap with the heel of your red wing boot (cause we wore the big heavy boots back then....not so great for footlocking, so anyway...!) and that would open the best tasting walnuts ever.
