Giant(Branch manager) vs Avant vs multi one

Ya, I didn't spell out my whole situation:

Have a Vermeer 600 on wheels that has been paid for a while, that will likely be sold once a decision has been made. Looking to get a little more lifting capacity and speed on a new machine. Also, we have been getting more and more clients that are worried about the conditon of their lawn, which seems to be a new phenomenon in our area as the ''urban'' population gentrify to the outskirts of the metropolis.. We hardly ever need 36 inch access, but it does happen every now and then, so it could be a nice feature.

The only stump grinder we have is a loader attachment (38 special style), which we are pleased with. Stumps aren't our niche and we only do them to avoid subbing or renting.

I have both dealers nearby, Avant is 45 minutes away and in my service area. Giant is with the local bandit dealer about 1h30 away. I have always bought used equipment so have never really gone to a dealer for service, have always relied upon local mechanics to help diagnose and then we do most stuff in-house.

Almost sounds like ground pressure is your most important spec...

Hey guys new to The Buzz but I would just like to say I own a 528 Avant and have put over 700 hrs on it and not put a wrench to it. I can't say enough good about it. I haven't got to try the bme out but I wouldn't worry about the plastic issue

Welcome to the Buzz, @Treeclimber7 ! @TimBr will be along shortly with the official "this is how we roll" summary, about searching former posts, etc... For now, glad you can join the group. Appreciate your input on the 528. I'd sure love to have one.

We have a gehl al20dx. Which avant made for gehl. It is awesome. We are currently looking for ways to try and get it out on every job. I just recently put foam filled turf tires on it. That was worth it. I did drive the branch manager giant at jambo to move the wood from the rigging challenge. The only thing I had to get used to were the controls as they were completely different from what I'm used to in our older loaders. The speed of the branch manager giant seemed similar to our other machines. Maybe it was a hair faster. I really like articulating loaders.

Ha! Good one, colb! I guess I'm a little too OCD about greeting new members. You saved me the trouble of mentioning the search utility. (Darn, I guess I just mentioned it anyway!)

Welcome to the TreeBuzz forum, @Treeclimber7! I think you're going to like it here!

Also new to TreeBuzz forum!

i spent a ton of time searching the forums but I could never find one with a good strong comparison maybe i was just searching wrong but hey thank you guys for your views and info on the loaders!

If you can, I recommend demoing each machine. I've spent a fair amount of time in an Avant 420 and Giant 254, both running branch manager head. The 420 is a smaller machine, ran with turf tires. I think this is a more nimble piece of equipment, especially when trying to steer with a long load in the grapple. The articulation turns the rear when you steer to keep the load from swinging wildly in the front. The Giant is a much tougher machine with a lot more power. It takes more operator finesse to steer long loads through tight spaces. The articulation steers with the front so that causes a lot of pendulum effect out at the tip of the load in the grapple. Neither one is very comfortable to operate on slopes and slopes greatly limit the lifting capacity. We do have duallie tires on the Giant that have a pretty aggressive tread. There is a quick release to take off outer tires for 36" clearance. We do a lot of wide open commercial properties so the bigger machine gets around a lot better.

I checked out the Giant at the tree expo that Dave had and looked to be built a bit tougher, would of been nice to run one and try them both out but that wasn’t gonna happen, I’m leaning towards that come spring to go along with my 725 mini skid

Lol, @TimBr . You do it better than anyone, so keep on it. If I get around to it, I'll ship you a cherry picker for Christmas. ;)

Will the 254 lift more than the 420, in the real world?

Yes the 254 will lift a lot more then the 420, I️ checked all the machines out last week at the Landscape show in Toronto, I’m leaning towards an Avant 528 or Giant 254, the 528 is $14-16 k more then a 254 depending on options and that’s with no attachments ! Yikes ! I’m not sure if I’ll be keeping my vermeer 725 Mini skid or not. The multi one machines also looked like but the only dealers in Montreal which kinda scares me
Off that machine.
