The german TCC took place on the 30th & 31st of May in a stunning location in the Karlsaue, Kassel. What can I say... massive Oaks, stunning climbs! People started drifting in on Thursday (there was a camping place a couple of hundred meters down the road), all very sociable and friendly- allthough having seen the trees all realised we were in for a clobbering in the next few days (maybe I'm just speaking for myself)!
Friday was the prelims: Workclimb & Footlock for all who weren't qualified from the last year (i.e. the first ten). 32 climbers, of whom half would carry on into the main event. It was great meeting up with old and new aquaintances, people from all over the place... New Zealand, Australia, Netherlands, Belgium, UK, France, Switzerland, US and - of course- Germany! Prelims were full on with excellent climbs and fast times, all accompanied by brilliant sunshine! Yo!
Saturday was an early start, 28 climbers (25 guys and 3 women) and a park full of gnarly climbs. Bernd Strasser and Kai Alamuddin Busemann set up Workclimb and Masters. Christine Engels' Aerial Rescue was pretty beefy as well, with a 25m footlock access and a 7min. time limit! Throwline was intimidating, too. First fork was 16m, then 23m and 30m, wow! A lot of zero point scores there... like they say, it's all in the mind. Workclimb was brilliant with a lot of big swings, but also with tricky, technical parts.
The competition was so close, in the end it was tenths of points that made the difference. After the competition the climbers into Masters' were: 4th Puk, 3rd Mark Bridge, 2nd Michi Hansch, 1st Ronny Epple.
That was also the starting order for Masters' . To understand the situation, try to picture this: After the comps, you'd footlocked about 95 meters in total, climbed some tough climbs, so you were whacked.
The Masters' Oak was a big 36m tree with a strong lean on it with stations on opposing corners and a narrow window to throw in to, i.e. bloody difficult! After Beddes had demo'ed it, it was Ronny's turn, he got the thing done in time and style. Michi didn't manage to get a point in the five allowed thows- sadly, he's a great climber, expect to hear more from this young man. Me next... what can I say, it was chaos: I wasn't feeling great (see thread "Dogs!") and I was tired... still, made the best of it and thorougly enjoyed myself! Puk last, who sadly, after a great initial, very high throw, appeared to run out of ideas and energy.
So at the end of the day it was:
Women: 3rd Martina Dongus, 2nd Ronja Ueberschaer, 1st Marlies Lasser ( I hope the family name's right, if not..sorry, Marlies!)
Men: 3rd Michi Hansch, 2nd Mark B., 1st Ronny Epple
We had a great time, Ronny's title was deserved- he really had to work for it... thanks to all involved, see you next time round!
