Gaining Access/Permission

When looking to do a rec climb or climbing event in public trees how do you folks normally go about getting permission.

Obviously a letter or a call is the method of contact but what prep work, information, waivers and other "stuff" do you find helpful when contacting them?

For some reason I don't think the simple, "Hi I wanna climb the trees at Fort Park" will get me very far. It might, but I doubt it.

All I do is rec climb.

Normally I don't ask permission in parks. Most of the time it's cool, sometimes though someone will rat you out and call the police, or a ranger, and then they usually tell you to come down.

It always starts with the same BS.... They ask crap like "do you have a permit to do this" stuff like that....

This is where knowing the rules of the park come into play. If you know they have rule saying you can't climb then you probably should leave the tree, if the park doesn't have rule about it then you can tell them to cram it.

I haven't been thrown in jail yet but it has gotten pretty close. There is one park where I climb once a year and always get busted, they always call security and it gets pretty testy.

Personally, I treat all these climbs like a masters challenge. 30 Min. tops...get in, hit 4 stations, score on the landing like a pro, get everything out of the tree and move on. web page

Sometimes just looking professional and standing out helps.
Put on a bright jacket and helmet and most everyone thinks your supposed to be there. Sometimes I cheat and name drop.
Like "so, you know John noname the city forester?" call him he'll tell you,...............

In Minneapolis the violation that will be written is for 'vegetation molestation'.

Now, that just sounds nasty enough for me to not even want to be anywhere near the possibility of the ticket.

It reminds me of Arlo Guthrie and the Group W Bench:

he stopped me right there and said, "Kid, I want
you to go and sit down on that bench that says Group W .... NOW kid!!"

And I, I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W's
where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after
committing your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly
looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father
rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And
they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the
bench next to me. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest
father raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean 'n' ugly
'n' nasty 'n' horrible and all kind of things and he sat down next to me
and said, "Kid, whad'ya get?" I said, "I didn't get nothing, I had to pay
$50 and pick up the garbage." He said, "What were you arrested for, kid?"
And I said, "Littering." And they all moved away from me on the bench
there, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I
said, "And creating a nuisance." And they all came back, shook my hand,
and we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing,
father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the
bench.

Good strategy is find out who is responsible for the tree care in the park, introduce yourself, tell them what you want to do and work from there.
