Fundamentals & Fine Point of Footlocking

Today I finally had enough patience to read Dan Murphy's whole article on footlocking. I thought it was very helpful and gave me a few ideas that I didn't catch at the last ISA Climb-off. So what do you guys think of this article if you get the TCI magazine and read it?

Thanks Murph

Dan

I too was really glad to see Murph on the cover of the TCIA mag. His articles are great! I still think his Tapered Hinge article is the best one ever written on the subject.

I hope the people over at TCIA give him the chance to write more articles soon.

Chris

I agree, Murph really spent the time to think of words that were easy to understand for the first timers. I think he should write more articles for TCI and anyone else.

Dan

I liked the article too. Wish it payed a little more homage to footlocking old school, with a prusik. I think thats the most practical way, on a daily basis, to go up fast and not have a lot of extra gear clunking around on you saddle, plus it costs less to get started. Yeah prusik, ascenders are cool too.

I think Murph was tring to get people to start footlocking! Because I know some pople that say wow that looks so hard I cant do that and never try it. So what Murph did was take that thought and say you can learn the technique by using the pantin, footlocking the tail, using ascenders and then finally your there and you can footlock on a prussik. That just my thought about his artical but I could be wrong... /forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif

excelent point Dan. Footlocking a prusik hitch and be intimidating in the begining. You hit the nail on the head.

Thanks all for the positive feedback....
I did put a lot of work into that last article and hope it helps advance our industry.
And I didn't do it alone... SO here's a few of the men that were of great assistance...
Thanks Tom Dunlap....
Tom quickly made several recommendations for changes which were implemented, and more importantly gave me the confidence to promote it shamelessly. Tom is the foremost authority on industry standards and techniques, and the related industry educational information, that i know of. So when he gave a thumbs up to the article, I knew it was OK. Having that confidence goes a long way... so thanks Tom...

Mark Chisholm turned me on to footlocking.

Big John Grier taught me to footlock and helped me get the technique somewhat efficient, and Jon shot the cover pic.

Jim Roach made some excellent suggestions for changes and helped me further refine my techniques. Jim also was instrumental in getting me to footlock in competition. That's another story though.

Dave Munch shot the pics for the body and gave me a huge amount of support in other areas that allowed me the time and energy needed to put this article together..

And the staff at TCI did an absolutely fantastic job. I was very impressed with their professionalism. Don Staruk in particular, organized the layout in a way that made it flow so well. He was a pleasure to work with.

So I got a lot of support which may not be readily apparent. The longer I live the more I realize the lone ranger mentality ios just part of the big lie.

So thanks again to all.

Your tree brother,
Daniel

Great article! As far as I know there isn't anything, written or video, that approaches the quality of the article.

I'm going to save and print the article for inclusion in our training program at Arborguard.

Before everyone gets carried away with screwing up their bodies proprioception with footlocking, i'd like to turn everyones attention to the new post in 'Training & Health' section: 'Bio-mechanical climbing techniques'. With advice from a fitness expert.

Footlocking is fast and fun to watch, but its hardly a good work technique. /forum/images/graemlins/bangtard.gif

Me and Ekka don't do it.

Ya, all you guys do is spike up or ride the boom. Whitch there is nothing wrong with it, you guys are getting older and you've gained the ability to ride up instead of footlocking like us "young-bucks" do! /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Ekka,

You need to sound in with your "trunk walking" technique!

Rich H. was showing me last wedsnesday when we got together.

Great and effortless way to get up a tree!!!
