I have a friend that is getting into tree climbing and would like to know basic gear he needs...I'm encouraging SRT with ropewrench...I'm posting on his behalf until he signs up with tree buzz himself...I have been talking to him myself in person, but I would like your input so that he can read what you all post and he can see the benefits of this forum and the helpfulness of people on the buzz

Thanks in advance for any help....

Ken

P.S. he may eventually get into small prunning work...

Well Darryl,

People's responses to your/my question are making it look like i've greatly over exaggerated the usefulness of the tree buzz forum...I thought people would have had a few more comments for you...maybe this thread isn't that busy or something else? I don't know...

But,

I will say again...people on this forum have been SUPER helpful to me with questions I've asked! So I still encourage you to sign up to the forum

Treestuff.com and wesspur both have some great preassembled climbing kits, some pretty basic and minimalist and others to fit niches like RADS kit, etc.
That's how I started, with a basic one, and accumulated toys since then.
Good luck!

I think it's just been a little slower on here lately because everybody's getting busy with work.

I think a wrench w/ Hitch climber or hitch hiker is a better place to start than say a uni or a bunch of ascender type stuff.

If I were starting someone new, I'd probably have them get a hank of imori rope, a rope/webbing bridge saddle in the low $300 range, a helmet, and a foot ascender.

For a lanyard, just pick up say 12' of some double braid and a snap to go with it. He can get a pulley and some hitch cord and use a hitch and pulley for the adjuster.

That'll be enough to have some fun and like Jon said he can stockpile gadgets later if he likes.

Good luck to him!

I agree with Adam, I think Imori or other fatter rope is probly best. If talking SRT then I think a HH is easier for a first time user to understand and use: let go here, hold here to go down, thats it. If DRT a hitchclimber pulley or a Pinto are both nice options and any plain old pulley will work for a lanyard.

I think 10mm prusik cord (OP, Beeline) tied with double fishermans works for both the lanyard, and the climbing system.

rope, saddle, lanyard, adjusters (prusik cord/pulleys etc), Foot ascender, helmet, safety glasses, throwline, 12 & 16 oz weight, throwline cube, 4 Petzl AMD or other quality biner, and maybe a hand ascender depending on fitness level. A few nylon loop runners and 20' of 7mm accessory cord make great accessory items.

No problem Ken!

Nick added some good stuff to the list. Take a picture of Darryl's face when he sees the $ total of his first gear order.
