Social media is great, but lacks depth.
one can argue that this site is social media.... just in a means that is before the way we know it now. For example I remember posting vid ( Believe it was here) before Youtube became what it is now. Man..... looking back I know of a ton of guys that had done that here before Youtube. Some are not even alive anymore.

I think Facebook and Instagram has plenty of depth, you just have to seek it out a bit more on there, unlike here where it is nicely organized.

I landed here to get trained from the ground up, so I could stay alive in my trees in year one. I couldn't get that on facebook or IG. I absolutely needed what Treebuzz (in particular) and the other arb forums had. If I was already a climber a few years ago I might not be participating on this forum, but I think I'd be settling.

I've found there's more folks here who take as scientific approach as possible and seek the newer info rather than just doing things as they've always been done before. Not to say every new technique, technology, or chemistry is better...
I have learned more and been steered in the right direction from more people here than any other source on the internet.

Not that the other forums and social media outlets don't have value just my experience and it only pertains to me.

There does seem to be a core group of people here who post frequently. Then there are the shadow lurkers/infrequent contributors such as myself.

Guilty. Mainly because I'm still learning so much. Also, my writing energy is usually gone by the end of the day job (software engineer) so I read forums instead of watch TV / netflix.

I was actually thinking over the last few days why I don't post more. Didn't come with much more than what I wrote above. But I really do enjoy reading & learning from everyone here.

Tried Facebook for a few months several years ago and was not impressed. Unfriended everyone (mostly fellow high school students from the 70s), deleted all my content and closed the account. Online forums are my preference because they cater more specifically to my interests. And I don't care what your meal looks like.
