For Vertical Mulching?

I was wondering how wide and how far out do you ussually go for a vertical mulching jobs? I happened across this job on campus and they went to the drip line and stopped and the width was only about 4-5 inches. These are pretty mature White oaks they did this to started from the trunks and went out to the drip lines.
I thought when do this you started at the trunks and did swawths about a foot or so out past the drip lines to help the new roots feed better.

vertical mulchin i think means individual holes. i think you are talking about radial trenching and yes common to go beyond dripline. best place to aerate/replace soil is wherever soil is packed and poor and roots need it.
