Footlockin scare!!!

it all looks good there blinky....cept for the 22kn sling I spy there....

You can always count on NoBiffy to be the safety police... I figure I'm safe on 22kn because I'm such tiny little fella.

And yep, stainless shackle with a saftey wire thru the bottom holes girth hitched with a 22kn sling which has an Am'D girth hitched to the other end. The ascenders are taped together and the backup cords are lashed to the ascenders with elastic cord just to keep things neat. The backup cord is actually a single piece of 7mm kernmantle clove hitched to the Am'D.
I used to use little Blake's hitches but a friend showed me that you can easily tie both tautlines at the same time so I switched.

I've tested this setup several times and the tautlines hold every time. It's nice and compact on the back of the harness if you can't send it down. My tether is short enough to rest while I get another bite of rope so it's fairly easy for an old geezer to footlock 50'.

Credit for the idea goes to Mike Skillin or whoever he stole it from. I think it's just an adaptation of the 'secret weapon' thing.

Blinky, how do you tie both tautlines at the same time?

[/ QUOTE ]

It's hard to describe and I don't own a video camera but if you just try it you'll see. You can tie a tautline one handed right? It's even easier if you're doing it with 7mm cord on 12mm rope sitting on top of ascenders. You just have to try it a few times and it becomes second nature.

I dress each knot and tie the stoppers with both hands once they're tied.

For work ascents I use ascenders on a doubled rope with tautlines backing up each leg. The tautlines go all the way to the harness tie-in. Takes less time to setup the a six wrap prussik...

Nice set up. Is there any particular reason you chose to use the petzels vs. going with the Kong that is already set up for dual lines?

Also: on the back up tether: How are you terminating that into your saddle? A clove hitch mid line or something? Or, are you using two separate lines with eye splices?

I am going to try this on my kongs this week. Thanks for the photo. I know I have seen this on the buzz before, but I just did not pay attention.

I went from Jumars to Petzls. I tried the Kong and Mar-bars and didn't like having both hands on the ascender. I keep my left on the ropes and my right on the ascenders.

It's single piece of 7mm cord clove hitched to the same biner as the 22kn sling.

Just as a note... I've seen this same setup but with 10mm cord instead of the dyneema sling with a prussik adjuster so the length of the tether can be changed. It looked cool but I haven't tried it.

Since a couple of folks have asked here's a couple of more pics...

First version harness attachment, backup cord wasn't actually tied to the biner. 1" tublar webbing was just a shroud for the sling and cord.

Current harness attachment point, pic shows 5mm cord which I've replaced with a more supple 7mm cord.

Another view of the ascenders.

it happens sometimes when it loosens up to much. It has happened to me in competitions before, and on the job. it sure does get the pulse rate going.

"RIGGS, RU RETARDED!!! "

Of course I'm retarded , Been climbing trees since 1979 , what do you think I'm a scholar ? I never had your problem , never will , Why ? because I can tie a knot and after I tie a knot I trust it will hold . Why ? because I tied it . If you tied my knot , I 'd might have to check it . Get on the long bus . you have to have thick skin in this bussiness and you better be able to footlock without your knot not grabbing and your hands quitting on you . Watch your mouth too , you have a new kid , bad example . You can't say that word retard anymore. Hope Santa brought you a ladder . Go Gators!
