foot ascenders helpful or hinderance?

i useto think that footlocking was the coolest way to get into a tree(though i suk at footlocking, but thats a different story for later)then i was introduced to the pantin foot ascender thought that was the then coolest thing since well spliced rope but the deeper i look into the many different climbing methods i find i can get into the tree much faster w/o the ascender and now finding the thing collecting sawdust in the bottom of my gearbag cause now it seams to be a hinderance in my way.but i live in fl and the trees are short and fat.

i've yet to try srt but i've seen tom use up close at geezers and i can see where it would be very useful for the 1 to 1 ratio but on a dynamic system w/ a 2:1 ratio its less effictive than other ascent methods is all i'm sayin short trees and climbs

My Pantin is in the bottom of my bag too. My son uses it when he climbs bit I haven't since I started footlocking. On a 2:1 system it's downright exhausting.

For work, footlocking with doubled ascenders on a short leash and doubled rope is the way to go. It make footlocking easy because you can take your time to get your feet and the rope right on every push without blowing out your arms.

i like Ascending with Pantin and Kong; then a sling dropped from Kong for the other foot.

The Pantin then stays on for a lil'help here and there; including helping with pretightening load lines with bodyweight; and up to 2x leg force(by holding hand locked on load leg and pushing down on control leg with Pantin)-friction. A lot of times i might not use it at all after ascent, but it is so discreet; it doesn't get in the way, so i leave it ever ready on my foot.

Nice thread. Going to have to try the foot locking with ascenders later. Still haven't gotten it down with the prusikk yet though. Just watched part of a climbing DVD my brother got for Christmas, and it shows different methods to get into the tree. Compared to footlocking the single Ddrt line with Blakes hitch, the Pantin seemed somewhat slower. But what can I say, don't own one yet, but looking forward to using it for SRT mostly.

in most of the climbing configureations i climb with now the rope doesn't stay close enough to my body and just pops right out of the ascender even when i teather the rope closer w/ a micro pully hand over hand is harder but faster as long as one has the approprate energy to do so

If there are Pantins in the bottom of gear bags let me know, we can work out a price. I'm serious.

Mine goes on before I put on my harness and stays on sometimes until I drive home.

True, on DdRT it isn't as easy for a few ratchets up the tail.

Ease in the short term is one consideration. Wear and tear on hips and shoulders in the long term is another that isn't so easy to understand. I am 100% convinced that my physical health is related to using improved climbing techniques based up rope ascending tools.

Your mileage may vary...

ahhh so true tom my does feel more worked when not use the little guy, but running lets say a comp a pantin would only slow one down, but in the tree in the back yard one is not out there to blaze through the tree?no

I have two, one at work and one at home. Yes I like the thing that much I wear mine until I know I'm done climbing for the day. True I won't throw it on if I'm not going very high, but I use it in more ways than to just ascend.

Hope you're backing that up in some way. A climber at Downey recently had one leg of his climbing line pop out of the Kong. Fortunately he has always used a backup.

There are many other stories out there of accidents with the Twin.

Of course, he was taught by the best.

im with tom, if ya aint using em, pass em on over to jersey, i have one and love it for srt and for a more controled ddrt short ascents (it sure does beat flailing about trying to body thrust)

as far as backing up the kong double ascender, good luck, its hard to find a biner that actually fits through both ascender holes at the same time with a split tail, i ended up using a petzl oval ring, it opens up enough and the eye and eye fits in their pretty good

i never back up my kong double cause i only apply the thing under my friction useing an air bridge to extend my hitch from my body so im not really woried if the kong fails cause i'm not going any where;)

Not sure what you mean. Is this in a doubled, dynamic system or static system? Are you attached to the Kong? 'air bridge'...???

Can you provide a photo?

if yall would look over at my avatar i'm holding two ropes left static for foot lock the one on the right has a lock jack w/ a teather or "air bridge" which extends the jack away from the attachment point so whan i put the kong double handled ascender its below my "friction hitch" or in the case of my avatar a lock jack.and yup its ddrt

Spyder,

Can you crop the pic and attach it so that we can see the two systems easier?

To me...DdRT on a single line isn't SRT. That falls into floating false crotch category...but that's just my way of looking at the complicated nomenclature that is developing.
