First attempt at footlocking........

Tough, but fun. Is it better to use a single rope with a running bowline to the branch, or loop the rope over the branch and use both strands to climb? Should the prusik be just long enough not to take any weight unless neccessary?

prussik should be long enough that its just out of reach.
i suppose footlocking a single line is easier, dont have to worry about wether you've locked both ropes or not, but that will be outweighed by the difficulty of grabbing a single line over 2

Get practiced at both SRT and DdRT footlocking. Then, in due time when you shift to SRT access you'll be adept.

I found the learning SRT FL wasn't that hard since I'd been doing DdRT for a while. Learing how to capture the rope with a new pair of boots requires a new learning curve too.

FL is a necessary skill to have for the times when you don't have gear to help out. The CMI Foot Ascender and Petzl's Pantin both make it VERY easy to get up a single rope.

I did a google search this morning to see if there was any other discussions about the CMI in other rope access work. Nothing except the arbo forums...what does that say?

I'll be ordering one next week. Stay tuned for details.

I received the CMI boot-ascender awhile back, a very nice, precision made piece of equipment. The spring tensioning buckles keeps the webbing around the boot snug, and in place. The cam configuration keeps the rope in place, not allowing the rope to “pop out”, making for a smooth ascent. I also use Blaze as my climbing line, which the cam allows the rope to feed effortlessly from the get go.
