Favourite Friction Saver Configuration

Lately I've been experimenting with different friction saver configurations: one ring, two rings, fixe pulley, ART pulley, carabiner... but I'm still not convinced that there is just one style of set up that is ideal for most of your climbing needs. No real point here, just looking for insights from some of you people, maybe you've got some tricks or tips to share. I like to install a friction saver from the ground in small trees but in larger trees, I find it quicker to just install an access line and then install a F.S. when I get up there, or just put one on the acess line before I go up and then back it up to work off of. This is probably the smoothest system that I've found so far.
Anyway, just thinking out loud here, any comments are welcome. Thanks, Russell.

I don't like pulleys. I find my line moves too quickly and can make it harder to hold my line while I pull my tail out. I usually climb with a 2 ring friction saver. It gives me enough hold friction while still being able to run smoothly.

Here's a link to a pic of the FC I am currently using. It's about 22" and use it everyday.

For removals and working off a spar, you might want to think about making an Adjustable False Crotch (AFC).

Oh, and lastly here's a link to a discussion about AFC's and whether using a ring/ring setup or ring/pulley is better. Good luck!

hi russell,

depending on the tree, i use the big ring small ring set up most of the time. sometimes i use the AFS that sherrill sells - but it works good only with velocity or blaze :( often i will footlock up and then set the saver -

peace,

matthew

I keep a 48" big ring/little ring FC on the spliced end of my rope all the time. I go up on the doubled rope and install it when I'm at the TIP I want.

I like it a LOT better than natural crotches. Haven't sprung for a rope guide yet... don't have a pressing need so far.

For spars I have an AFC homemade from tenex with a nylon prusik.
