Fast forward pruning.

I will assume that if you keep posting without fixing all the errors that you are ok with the idea of looking like a dummy.

C'mon Nick...
Everyone should take another look at the video... 2 minutes... watch carefully now... becasue Nicky here doesn't leave one green leaf growing within 8' of the trunk.. he guts this poor tree, taking out every single interior limb and NOTHING else...

You put up a vid to show climbing and pruning skills, Clueless to the fact that you raped that poor tree. , then turn around and call me a "dummy".. you're right up there with Bob Vila on this one Nick...

Dan I wrote a long PM for you, and you box is full. So I guess I will tell you in open forum. You are not adding anything to this by arguing. Try to be nice once in a while. Find the good in something. The best teachers learn as much from their students as they teach. You are just arguing with him ruining it for the rest of us. BE NICE. Or Tom will fix it. Common lets get it back together and stop being 4 years old. And dont worry I already sent a PM to 223 as well, his box wasnt full.

This argument is ruining a potentially good conversation.

Cleaned out the inbox a bit..

so let me get this straight..

Nick guts a tree, calls it "reduction pruning", and me a dummy, and I need to be nice..

Got it.. OK... I'll work on it...

How's this:

Hey Nick,
Great job on that video... I loved the innovative camera angle.. very creative. You've got good climbing skills and the potential to become a great climber... pretty good so far huh?... now here's the part where I get stuck... I just don't know how to say... "you're clueless and need to learn how to prune a tree", and make it sound nice...
LOL

That was an aweful aweful pruning job.

Also, I went and read the first page to see where Daniel was being so offensive......

I didn't find it. He didn't agree with what you did and he told you.

You want to see offensive feedback, read mine or even worse read Riggs or OldDirty's comments to people.

This "pruning" job sucked!

Don't respond, just shut up, take it in, think about it and also go visit two years from now and see what that very tree looks like. Thick sprouts everywhere. So what did that get the customer? A lions tailed tree for about a year, more prone to wind damage and now a thicker tree than last time.

I used to do them wrong in the past too.

YES, I agree, Pin Oaks tend to have a huge amount of dead on the interior and limbs that are about to be dead (on the interior). Trimming these limbs often does remove a lot of the interior. But I saw very healthy green foliage limbs being removed and the only reason seemed to be was because that they were on the inside.

Labeling the video and the thread reduction does show you do not know what a reduction is.

I would not have reacted so negatively, but you guys are jumping all over Daniel when Daniel had valid points and was not offensive. Just because someone does not like what you did, does not make it offensive. You got offensive.

Hey Murphy..... Big Tree LOL!
One should examine oneself for a very long time before thinking of condemning others. The best way to succeed in life is to act on the advice we give to others
You talk a big game, for someone who calls themselves a climber, when you only go up 10 ft on every tree and put a notch in it. Quit under-cutting your killing the industry! How bout you show us a video on proper pruning, like to see that! haha ô¿ô
I won't insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said. Go put your creed into your deed.
Hey Just an FYI: There are two kinds of morality side by side, one which we preach but do not practice and another which we practice but seldom preach. Consider how hard it is to change yourself and you'll understand what little chance you have in trying to change others.
Just remember, there's a right way and a wrong way to do everything and the wrong way is to keep trying to make everybody else do it the right way. Take Care

Sounds like your holding a grudge Timmy... what can't you let go?

Ricks being brought into the picture again..... I have to say, I cant stand the way his crews do work and its amazing no body has goten killed while working under his name. Look at it this way though, if you build a quality customer base by only excepting to do quality work, then you will have no problem being around longer then him. FYI, for the guys working in competition to Rick, he just built a house in Hawaii and plans to run it via computer from there. Having a guy that currently bids on jobs (and admits to not getting out of the car to really look at the tree half the time) to run it from the shop. I dont think you will have much to worry about seeing how I dont see the company being around much longer...... And no I didnt stay at Ricks very long, I like to think I am way better then that place. Would never lower myself to there standards.

Fairfield... who's this Rick guy, and what's wrong with his set up... running a tree service from Hawaii while buzzing sounds good to me.

Ordinary work...

This dude needs some pruning tuition!

I would be the first to admit that i pruned liked that on quite a afew occasions.
It wasnt till i went and studied my Arb course that i realised it was no good.
But i have to admit at the time i thought it was top notch pruning, nice and neat,no foliage in the interior, etc.

Boy's got good intentions and will learn from this thread

Ok we got that. Lets give him a way to solve the problem.
Where can he learn a better way? How does he get past his boss selling crappy work? X, you said you used to do the same thing at times before you knew better. How did you change? where did you learn? What was your reasoning at the time?

I said I did the same thing too. I used to work for a hack and thats the crap he sold because he didnt know any better. They didnt teach Gillman pruning when I went to college. Reading, trying to learn from everyone I could were ways I learned. The biggest part was getting the opportunity to work for a company that cared, and was willing to invest in their employees. I have been here 7 years now, been through several multi day classes with Gillman (personally), and numerous other classes and conferences. These would be my suggestions.

Thinking in tree time...how much of ANY 4-8" dbh tree is left in place when that same tree reaches maturity? Almost none...the branches have self subordinated and gone away.

Quit the bickering and beating!!! This sounds like grade school playground behavior.

Tom,
you sound like a primary school teacher talking to adults.

We are all over 18 years of age,we all have an opinion on this matter and we should be able to say what we want to, to express our opinion.

Agreed,
The critiques of this pruning are far from bickering. I actually was trying to be nice. Nick, it's for your own good. I've been there too.. most of us have. Funny thing is it was Tom D and Mike Maas that ripped me a new hole (back in the day at AS) when I put up some post about how elevating trees looks so good and mimicks the natural environment of the woods where no tree has low branches...

For twenty years I elevated trees regularly, thinking it was quick, easy and looked good, and thought I was doing good work... I still will if a customer INSISTS, but 99% of the time I can explain how important to a tree's health those lower limbs are, and the customer will listen and usually let it go, or we come to an acceptable compromise.

IN either case, I've done my job of informing the customer, and arguing for the best interest of the tree. Most really appreciate the education, and will respect you for being a knowledgable professional.

As far as working for a hack, you can transcend and show him different.. If he won't go there, find another boss who will, or start your own thing. Hacks are a dime a dozen in this biz.. a knowledgable pro is rare gem!

I dont exactly work for a hack, a close look would probly lead you to a reasonable guess though.

Pruning today though I tried to think of what everyone said and went a bit softer while still trying to meet the customers expectations.

In all fairness it wasnt just Daniel, I just jump on him cause he rubs me a bit the wrong way.

Thanks for the feedback though everyone.

It was a nice camera angle though huh?

Chopper...sometimes it seems like adolescents in here.

There are many ways to express opinions. Hog piling and the feeding frenzy that gets going has nothing to do with any sort of discussion.

'Say what we want to...', of course...do it in a professional manor. Lately it seems like the level of discussion is dropping. I'd bet dollars to donuts that if some of these comments were made face to face that it might lead to fist to face. Hiding out behind a keyboard changes the dialog for some people. Not me though.

Think of it like this, most trees have an inner and an outer crown, in your vid you removed a large portion of the inner crown, this is not a good thing. So next time dont remove so much of the inner crown.

Thats it, there is nothing more to say on the issue.
