Falling a tree with big old long dead branches

Air horn in a can is pretty fn loud.
Definitely worth a try at a few bucks and
may come in handy for a climber in remote location or
neighbouring yard who can't yell anymore.

The air horn is a good idea, they can be loud. When stuff's falling from above it's usually the safest place on the other side of the base. A simple alarm to run could be the wrong thing to do. As deadfall plinkos or spears down it would be good (if you trusted your watcher) to be told to stay put but get ready to do the sidestep or the dash and which direction.

+2 on the air horn can Ropeshield!

+3 on the faller keeping his eyes upward at the moment of truth Boreality!

When I'm felling any tree anywhere, my eyes are glued to the action above to confirm that the trees's moving in the direction I want, and to react instantly to falling debris heading my way regardless of any spotter's cues.

Agree with the above, set it up as safe as possible, don't rely on a last minute bale, mitigate to lesson the need to respond, be vigilant, know your stuff, know your ability, don't become complacent and if in doubt get someone who isn't.
I've never thought of a air horn, those sport type portable ones are as loud as hell, I'd probably mess myself.

What do you think of this?

You could cut into the tree above you or have it at the ready.
Woould also be a fine shield for those throw ballers that can't hit the broad side of a tree.

Like that idea--very big tree but if I can get a line up high enough and through all the clutter I'll do that.
