Extreme home makeover....JMJ Tree Service

Looking for some input on the opinions out there about Sunday's episode of Extreme Home Makeover. Congrat's to the family for the new home. However, this guy suffered a tree-related accident--a friction device had broken off a tree and hit him in the face! He lost an eye and now has a metal plate in his head. WOW! Judging by his new website the extreme team set-up for him and the photos of him that aired on the show he is definately Old-School Tree Man. Just wondering if any one saw the show? Check out his website JMJ tree service, KY area.

Just watched it online. Wow! Nice place. He's really a big-hearted guy who has suffered a nasty situation. I wonder though how many will now contact him to do their tree work to help him get back on his feet? How about his business? Is he still generating enough work to keep him going through this economy?

He's definitely old school. I cringed looking at the photos on the website. Is there any way to foster a better attitude toward safe work practices?

The pics on his website are interesting indeed...

Denim jeans & singlets is a very unpro look IMO, but one shot i dont think he is even tied in at all, never mind no the PPE!

Hopefully they are just some bad old pics and nowadays he has lifted his game around safety.

Apparenty his wife is an ISA cert arborist, so they should know better as far as safe work practices go.

Did not notice his wife was certified, hopefully with his accident behind him PPE and safe work practices will fall in line with industry standards. I'm sure he's not a careless guy, however, we all know that at-risk behavior leads to bad things.

I'm imagining something along the lines of maybe a loaded system and an eye sling coming loose or breaking and sending the portawrap/device rocketing out away from the tree. I had a guy set up a timber hitch incorrectly once, I dropped a big limb into the rigging and next thing I know the limb is crashed into the shrubs below, and the porta wrap was in the tree with me. D'oh.

tell if i'm wrong; isn't there a three points of contact rule in regards to free climbing?

Im sure this is no longer an acceptable practice.
