The trunk of this tree tends to vary in color from a dark brick red to black. I notice many of the trees around here are red deep down in the "valleys" of the ridges on the bark, but black up top. Either the bark darkens with age or (and what I think the real answer is) the bark is really good at absorbing smog. This IS LA afterall. I notice the black wipes off. Hmmmm
Please excuse my ignorance but getting back to basics I am wondering about these 'names' for Eucs.
We are talking about different 'cultivars' of eucs. Right?
Couple of reasons why I don't think it's E. sideroxylon.
1. The "ironbark" on E. sideroxylon is far more persistent in the upper canopy to a lot smaller branches. On E. dura outer branches are distinctly smooth.
2. E. dura has dark furrowed bark which is not flakey, fibrous or showing that reddish brown through.
3. If you look at the caps very close E. dura has a slight buldge before the rim, like a subtle swelling.
4. The foliage color on E. sideroxylon is more greyish/blue.
5. The leaves on E. sideroxylon are narrower and curved (sickle like).
E dura aka gum topped ironbark
Here's bit of a helper if you have enough detail. The world of ID in eucs is tough!
