I know there must be restrictions, but my “redneck” mind thinks the powers that Be should allow qualified crews to remove something like that when it has lived it’s life span & is now dead, saving as much as possible of the wood.

An Old Growth (16 ft DBH) windfall from last winter. It was very much alive when it fell across a very deep draw and exploded. The lower portion of the tree is on state park property and will never be touched. The upper half (10 ft DBH and smaller) is on a private parcel I have been working on, so we are trying to salvage what we can. I managed to get a clean 16 ft log (6500-7000 board feet) out of the chunk in the photo. We will probably salvage 20,000-30,000 board feet of this stunning old world goodness! Mill it, Slab it, Split rails, and Barn Shingles!

A Redwood isn't even considered mature until its a 1000 yrs old. No shit! These ancient old growth monster are very protected, and I personally think its a very good thing. They must be saved for future generations to see and experience. True wonders of the natural world that will hopefully be around long after we are gone.
