Reversable? We've got one that isn't and its about useless.

It is reversable. Don't know about the Tanaka.

tanaka is reversable too. About the only problems we're having with it are the fuel tank has a leaky neck and no matter how tight we crank down the chuck or vertical mulching auger works loose.
I think they are just symptoms of old age for the drill. We've had it in service for almost 7 years now.

Try tightening the chuck at each of the three holes for th key in succession. I don't know if you have already tried it but I understand that when u use all three spots whatever you clamp down stays put.
