Dynamic vs. Static Cabling

Keep in mind that at the end of a lever, such as a limb, the effect of every unit of mass upon the crotch is multiplied by its distance from the crotch.

A 1 pound twig will have an effect weight of 10 pounds 10 feet from the crotch.

The taper of the limb is such that the closer to the crotch it gets the more mass it supports.

Kinda like a widening triangle!

I agree Mark!

Too many times I see people over-pruning trees. An experienced climber can tell how much effect the pruning is having on leverage. I rarely quote "20% thin" or "20% reduction" these days. I prefer, "a reduction in end weight by selective pruning through reduction and/or thinning cuts". But then my clients hire me because they care about trees as much their ability to shade or cause harm; ie. they trust me to maintain the trees as i see fit. Its a shame that most local authority contracts are centered on rigid quotes of percentage thin or reduction - but I understand why when it comes to comparing quotes and auditing work.

Doesn't help the tree much though, which is the same as not helping ourselves much...........

For trees that have poor taper and I have to dismantle them, I clear a path for the descent of the top, and knock the top out first. It makes a huge difference to the stability of the tree keeping the side branches; they all help absorb the energy. Can't always be done, but quite often it can. A similar principle I feel. I'm sure some boffin will explain why?

Tourque = force x length of moment arm.........

Of course, big wood is heavier than small twigs and brush. Going after the small stuff gives a reduction benefit but the real opportunity is in the subordination benefit.

The work here in Germany can be crazy at times - all they need is their pseudo-science to justify butchering trees.

I heard someone say "hire a landscaper to cut off all of the low limbs, an arborist to cut out all of the dead, dying, cracked, crossing branches, and then hire a consultant to cut the top third off." That is how many trees get gang-banged here. /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
