DMM throw hook.

Just checked out the Vergo instructional video, looks excellent. It is very similar in size and function to the Cinch but has a larger handle which is good. It looks like it's easier to feed rope back through it, they modified the design (from the Cinch) to improve that. Looks like a go to me.

Thanks Moss, I might just have to give it a try.

I tried this out the other day on a huge flowering cherry. I liked it but I had a hard time tying the end of my climb line to it. The knot gave me problems when I would try to pull it over a branch. The knot would make it "jump" over and I couldn't get it on some crotches. I was thinking about using a 10' hank of an old climb line with a splice and then tying the end of the ling to a biner and the biner to the end of my line when I need it. I don't want to clutter up my harness with 50' of an extra line for using this thing once or twice a climb. Anyone have any ideas?

I've seen @SingleJack using a configuration for this. I can see how this would get a knot out of the way.

Found his vid with this.

Diggin the hook. It really is freakishly functional and well-balanced. Got it stuck pretty bad in some dead ivy and couldn't get it to come back - but it still flicked effortlessly, and I got it over the backside of that mess, and dropped it to the ground instead. Neat.

I already posted about technique I'm liking, but didn't mention how I built mine out.

Since the #1 rule of throw hook is that throw hook is not PPE, and since it was already hard enough justifying $100+ for an adult ninja tool, I skipped the full kit and had some fun making a minimal setup with questionable cordage choices:

Cordage is 50ft of 8mm GM Climbing double braid (!) accessory cord, cheap off Amazon. (It seems to be legitimately UIAA rated, 19kN.) Hitch cord is 1/4" Sta-Set. Don't think it's going to win any durability awards since I can already see the core through the sheath around the tight eye. Ocean Vectran next?

I wanted to try it with 50 feet of rope in the factory configuration, before trying it on a shorter leash. Ditching the rinky-dink friction hitch cord would be nice.

I got 50' of New England's 11mm Fly rope and just purchased a BOLA from Gordon. I haven't used this combo yet as I haven't had much time to splice the rope. Hoping this combo will play nicely when it comes time. I'm glad you like your captain hatchetation.

Captain hook aka "Hooker McHook Face" has changed the game dudes.
Been using it for about 9 months now, and I find that 7 out of 10 climbs I'm bringing it with me and using it.

Here's just a few of the uses for the captain hook. I plan on making another video covering "Supplemental work positioning aid" usage, redirect retrieval methods, Cap'n Speedline, gear hauling, and how to properly annoy another climber and/or bucket operator using the cap'n, and much more.

Great vid Wyatt, the Hook is meshing nicely with your climbing, and yes it makes life much more reasonable working on slippery trees. That situation where the Hook doesn't completely seat due to a slightly too wide diameter limb is pretty common. It grabs well, I've never had the Hook come out in that scenario.

Sometimes I use the tail of my climb line with the hook as well. I found tying a bowline with a larger eye rather than a knot right on the shackle of the hook works well.
