Well Twiggy, if you're as a good as you sound then yeah, you're worth more than that. The boss has to be able to survive paying it though. Maybe your man-hour is worth more than the other man-hours.

I'm not saying I'm all that. But I can handle anything the company has thrown at me. We don't have too may monsters out here so it's not really comparable to nor cal

It's hard to ask for a raise now, I have a green horn 6 months in and a guy who keeps ducking up but cant get fired and who can't prune or anything so I'm expected to hit unrealistic time estimates so obviously I'm always like 2 hours over. Lucky for me the green horn has an eye for pruning and can understand knots.

thought we were all underpaid.
im an MCA and ISA cert., climber bucket guy, two hands on saw (most of the time), rig most unless i can cut high n let fly, time efficient. I feel I'm underpaid sometimes
But my employer sends me to almost anything i show him, all about getting us what we need, pays for any certs, and give me any time i need off when it comes to my son, who's 3. theres a lot i get paid that is not in my check

Please stop sending me job offers. Lol. Thank you but I am very happy where I'm at. I just hang nothing to compare my wages to so I am looking for some standards employer's use determine there employees value.

What is a typical percentage of the rate of return that a crew leader should expect to be paid? We typically pull in on average $$$ per man hour what should a qualified certified arborist be paid for their efforts. I think 20% is on the low end of the scale and 35% is on the higher end.

I think that's a pretty good guess, it might be hard to squeeze any more out of $60 per hour.

So do you mean based on the daily income 20%? Or do you mean 20% for the 165$ for 1 man hour/3 people

As an owner the least I can stomach is $60/ man hr. Shoot for $75+.
That said we do specials for older folks and or fixed incomes.

I do not have anyone but me who can make it happen, I climb and ride the bucket.
I pay $15 and $18/hr no benefits other then shirts and occasional food and drinks. They both have cdl's and can cut, work hard all day, prune well from the ground, but they can not make it happen.
I'd pay over $20/ hr for someone like you, cause you can make me money, while I go start a second crew.

My reading has suggested total labour burden should not exceed 38% in a labour oriented industry.

So by that token at $100/billable hour, a production (variable cost) employee could be paid $38/hr............oooorrr, not.

Many are not aware of the concept of payroll overhead. (took me a while to realize and nail down the value)

For example, a large, local municipality trying to deal with our ice storm, offered $140/hr for 2 workers + 3t chipper truck + chipper. Or $160/hr for 3 workers+ 3t chipper truck + chipper. Thats $20/hr for the 3rd worker.

IF your paid that worker 15/hr AND you added payroll overhead (4% vacation pay, employer contribution for employment insurance, employer contribution for canada pension plan deduction, WSIB worker disability coverage etc) which equals about 22% dependant of bennies. The worker costs $18.30/hr. Who then contributes a whopping $1.70 to overhead (Direct expenses) and profit.

Anyone who took that latter offer is stunned, and would have been better off sending two 2 man crews.

Around here a $30/hr worker costs about $38/hr the company.

You can reverse the math on that for your own review as a worker.

Billable Rate Labour Burden Hourly Wage
$100.00 $38.00 $31.15
$95.00 $36.10 $29.59
$90.00 $34.20 $28.03
$85.00 $32.30 $26.48
$80.00 $30.40 $24.92
$75.00 $28.50 $23.36
$70.00 $26.60 $21.80
$65.00 $24.70 $20.25
$60.00 $22.80 $18.69
$55.00 $20.90 $17.13
$50.00 $19.00 $15.57

Now; to muddy the waters, lets talk about applied and unapplied hours. And introduce anarchy with the variable of accurate job estimation.

What county do you live in Twiggy? I'm on the border of Columbia, Sullivan, and Luzerne. I work full time on a very small (40 mins total from end to end) powergrid that Asplundh has had a contract on for 30 years. At first class with 2 1/2 years of full time production exp and no ISA(still studying) I get 18.65 and am on a two man manual crew. My foreman, (the only other guy on the crew) gets 20.25. We take turns doing the climbing/ground work. We also get 11 paid holidays and one week vacation at one year and two weeks at five years. I often work weekends for some of the local outfits and get $150-$200/day depending on the job. Weekend work is almost always removals but lately I have gotten a few pretty good prune gigs.

I am one man down from the owner of the company. I am basically field operations supervisor. I am in NE PA. I prune beautifully if I say so myself. Do removals big or small. I don't have to buy anything for work. All clothing is covered. I do train other employees as I am the only arborist besides the owner. We work for higher clientele. I have received the super service award from angles list for 3 years. As long as I have been with the comp. I drive all the trucks, and equipment. I get a few paid holidays. 2 sick days. And I'm up to 7 days paid vaca. We climb right here.... no messing around. Next year I'm going for gold at the competition.

I couldn't have wrote it any better that is pretty much my resume to a tee

Mangoes, it's way worse than that here in the US. A $25/hr employee costs me about $42/hr after payroll tax, unemployment and WC. And my rates are reasonable compared to others I talk to.
