Deer ate the trees

We planted a bunch of trees for some folks last year. I stopped by for some other work last week and noticed that a bunch of the trees had been girdled, presumably by deer. I feel bad about it, it never crossed my mind before and has never been a problem. I feel partly responsible, what would you do?
It’s a lesson for everyone involved. Now you really know, and so do they. If the client is reasonable, I would say maybe just honor “some” sort of portion of them out of good faith. If nobody knew, it isn’t negligence, it’s a learning moment.

I recommend protective measures or deterrence of some sort for everything I plant in my area. The deer are a real problem in a landscape and in the wild as well. They are really changing the species diversity by heavily browsing on saplings in the wooded areas around here. Oaks are in trouble. On a larger, more advanced scale, they are steering much of the Adirondacks into a sick Beech monoculture.

I don’t think you are responsible for critter damage, but if you want to make a good impression on your clients, you could offer to cover half the cost of a new tree and then put some kind of trunk guard on them.
I have nothing of value to add to this thread that’s hasn’t been said
but when you said this I remembered sleeping in my hammock out in your yard and feeling like the coyotes that I herd where coming in to eat me ! I didnt sleep much that night lol
