Re: hold on to your shorts!!!!!!!!!!!!
It ain't that simple. If you are on welfare and get a job that can't pay your bills, you still lose welfare. If you then lose the job, you have to go through extensive red tape to get back on welfare. People living at the edge might be easy targets, but you're dreaming if you think their benefits represent a significant part of our national budget. Show some compassion. Nobody wants to be on welfare. That stereotype of people who gleefully do nothing so they can stay on the dole is either pure fantasy or, at best, represents a tiny fraction of welfare recipients.
And everyone who buys anything other than food pays taxes. Plenty of people (even some not on welfare, and many of them working multiple jobs) pay no income tax, but we all pay sales tax and we all pay property tax (either directly or as part of our rent).
I understand the frustration of feeling your hard-earned money is supporting some lazy bum. But if you really look at the facts, a lot more of your money goes to advertise the lottery or subsidize the oil industry. Read All our Kin by Carol Stack for a real look at welfare society. It's pretty out-of-date, but still very enlightening about those "bums" on welfare.
