Compact Bulldog Bone

I have experimented before with the "bump" in the spine on the rope side, but found the release to be too "jumpy". Just be aware that both ends of the spine are "bulbous" to match the size of the chainlink sideplates, and so there is 1/32" less gap between the spine and the bottomfriction link when the spine is turned in, which will make advancing and tending rather more difficult (depending on rope size).
The small pinto spacer can be used at the top friction link, with or without an internal bearing, depending on the rope size

What you've done here seems quite genius, Tomi. I wish I had the same option, though mine are rather out of date and the spines are straight stock. In fact, one of mine is made from 3 year old OAR parts.

I was going to try a sort of "speed bump" mod with one of mine, for added friction at the lowers and improved feathered release of the uppers. It was brought to my mind from all the work that some climbers have done with the Rope Runner (monkeylove, tr33climb3r, etc).

I'm on the border line of needing a larger diameter line (due to my weight). I'm thinking this spine flip might be a good option for me. I guessing the hump must be clear during ascent or you wouldn't be doing that?

If that works out, maybe the hump could be machined into all newer spines at the center of the overall length and on both sides, giving the hump spine a 4 sided wear life. What do you think Gordon?
Maybe it's from all the sammichs due to this thread? [emoji3]

Eric in your DSRT vid with the 2 bones where you running a version of the "Triple Threat". I only saw 1 base anchor. Love that vid.
Thanks, Monkey. What I used in that vid was 3 lines: Escalator, Tachyon, and 7/16" KMIII.

The Escalator was the standing side, or base anchored side. It came out of the bag, through the base anchor, and up to the first union. From there, a carabiner formed the union to the Tachyon and KMIII, which both run parallel and pass over the TIP and back down to the ground.

To make it more like Jared's kit, it may be best to choose a Delta Quick Link to form the connection and allow for ideal loading at any angle.

me thinks Gordon is in north cackalacky, whilst I reside in northern californi. never been to the east coast but I like the Newhart show, that George Utley. how do I pm ?
That's not the same state at all! Who said that? If you click on surveyors avatar, his profile pops up and there should be a start conversation button.

I was going to ask why stop the single line short but I think I got it, correct me if my thoughts are not correct.

Nevermind, the more I thought about it they both apply the same tip load (I think) so back to my original question. Or is it really just a matter of preference?

Sometimes, it's difficult to pull two ropes into the same union at the same time, so the "Y" system can make for super quick set up.

If I had enough of the same rope (two long lengths) I would find a way to set up two lines in the same union with ease. Maybe the Rope Shield?

Thanks Eric. I was at the Harrisburg Sportsmans Show so sorry for the delayed response. While there I pickedup a Kong Frog and 225 feet of Yale XTC 24 11.7 Sunburst i think for dirt cheap (50 cents a foot). It's reddish and black as opposed to the Sunburst color but the identification ribbon reads as if it is the Sunburst. At some point I iintroduce it to the bones and report back on how they play together.

I'm thinking maybe as a lanyard end to try out. They are 26kn and I think tower guys have been using them for a while. I tried clipping it on the D rings on my saddle and it works pretty good. I know I have seen them around some but I need to do some Google research and make sure. Well and then see if I trust it.

I know a years ago guys on here bought some of the original versions but could nrver really find a practical use for them in the trees. I may not either but for $20 how do you not buy such a cool looking device.

Looks like you scored pretty good there ML. I sure hope you enjoy all that. It'll be one of your first departures from Vortex?

It will be, I figured I'd give it a try. If I don't like it I can always hang my ZZ from it, yes I still love my ZZ and sometimes Ddrt just makes more sense fgor the task at hand.

Just thought I'd add...

You'll also notice that Ian lowered me from the last 6' or so. I couldn't have been lowered from much higher in that scenario with the ropes joined as they were because the Y had been redirected through asymmetrical unions about 20' away from the carabiner connection. If I was 25' from the ground when he tried to lower me, I would have stopped at 5' off the ground and all tension could have been released from the base anchor. At that point, I'd be hanging in an awfully sucky, obnoxiously complicated French Tandem Prusik system with an anchor line hanging off a midline connection. Excuse me while I go throw up.

The only way you can get lowered off a Y is if you passed both lines through the same redirects or if the carabiner connection happened to be just above the base anchor sling.
