Commercial Awareness

There has been alot of preaching to the choir about not being recognized properly, being undervalued and a lack of public education.

So right here and now I know other threads have ideas on how to improve public awareness of ISA and why it is good and so on. What I am asking for is ideas and names. I'm seeing if there are people that will put there money where there mouth is. Realistic ideas are great and names as I said if I get enough interest here I will start a petition with as many paying members names if they get the message clear enough ISA may do something but if we just sit here on the buzz, well so much for public awareness.

So is anybody willing to come on board with this

Kevin, it's not clear what you are starting, or what ideas you are adding. One place to start is by looking at the wheels that are already there, to be sure that we aren't reinventing any!

http://treesaregood.org/pressrelease/press.aspx

53 press releases, and 4 PSA's. Which have you used? What do you think should be different, in what is offered to US to USE?

Or are you saying that it's someone else's job to work in your market to educate and demonstrate and recognize the value of arboriculture? Who is better qualified than you?

I've just been reading to many threads of people complaining about lack of public knowledge so I'm not trying to put anything anyone has done down at all I'm trying to just add to and make a push. I know another thread talked about radio ads by isa to the public so I just know isa will notice better if it's not just me saying I want but we want but thankyou for that link its a huge help

You're welcome! That page is Easily findable through the ISA or treesaregood sites. PSA's and press releases can be altered to fit your market and your business.

Good point about needing to constructively communicate more with ISA HQ. ISA solicits input from us with surveys, but the response rate is even lower than the % of people in this decaying empire who actually drag their sorry butts off the couch and down to the polling place. In France >80% vote.

OK now I'm depressed--time to go climb a tree!

Jamin that is great and yes radio and or tv ads is a definite goal. I'm not asking for any time or money right now I'm just seeing how many of us would want to see this happen

I have started by contacting my chapter president for further information. But that is just ISA Ontario if any of you could supply me with more email contacts for your province/state so I can contact more and really get this out there it would be a huge help and please spread the word if there is only 3 of us thats not much of a demanding backing for me thanks guys.

The PSA's and press releases are good and all but I think a PSA Radio Ad would have more impact.
Another idea I had is to approach LARGE corporations like McDonald's and other national/international chains that have properties that need to be maintained and have them write into their standards of operations that trees are cared for by ISA Certified Arborists. To me this seems like an ideal task for an ISA suit to undertake. Suits talking to suits.
I presented this to my old chapters president 10 years ago and he didn't seem to interested in talking to me.

That's my 2¢.

If we could present this to these companies as a selling point for their company I think it would have more impact. They already use recycling etc. Not sure how but just a thought

Boy, I gotta change my sig line--=someone viewed this thread and pm'd me to see if they could use "my" stuff on the Media

If you're an ISA member, this is YOUR page. Have you listed your company's zone of operations in their database? I get referrals from there from time to time.

Great idea on the high profile company connection--it just takes one lucky contact. I have a client whose japanese maple looked bad--turned out to be SGRs. He is prez of a property management company that looks after dozens of shopping centers etc. So soon (supposedly) they will all be out there finding the flare!

Stacy, congrats on the RCA--hope it works out for you!

Speaking of upping the profile: Joshua on page 43 here http://www.landscapemgmt-digital.com/landscapemgmt/201204#pg4
is giving us a great how-to about diversifying, getting recognized, educating, and o yes probably turning a tidy profit in the process.

Met him a few years ago at expo; rented him space on our hotel room floor. He's got the fire, and it shows in the interview. That same pr thing could be done on a local scale too.

Great thread, we need to pool our resources (time, money, contacts) and concentrate on this issue. ISA is starting to focus on this issue. 4 of the 7 strategic goals are related. http://www.isa-arbor.com/about/resources/about_ISAStrategicPlan.pdf

I suggest you contact the ISA board of directors (don't forget today is the last day of voting).

What would you think about a voluntary fund based on sales - maybe add a dollar per job sold to send to a dedicated fund. We can promote trees and our profession in a similar method to milk, beef, or eggs.

Awesome idea and I have contacted my chapter president but I want to bring as many chapters into this as possible so if you know a member of any chapter board please get them to at least look at this thread for starters

So I just heard back from my prez. And she said if I can't just be patient with the elections she will get the executive director in touch with me soon. So I'm going to really push these ideas. I especially like the pooling of our experts with the idea of $1 of every job sold with isa's help we can't get that radio ad and maybe talk show time on air.

If people are willing I may look for speakers in the future not just suits but the boots on the ground kinda guys

Kevin -Sounds great. I think there will be a lot of support for this program. I know a couple of people in the Western Chapter that will be supportive.

I will work on this with you. I hosted a radio talk show for several years in Oklahoma and it can be a very effective platform for promotion and education.

By the way, I am VP of the Texas Chapter.

Paul

Paul thanks for getting on board I will be talking with my chapter soon but the more chapters we can rally the more impact we'll have I'll definitely be in touch

Ok been sitting on this for a bit but if we started looking for guest speaker for talk shows who would be the most recommended from you guys?

All of you that have offered help now I'm looking for it. September 19th, 2012.

My ISA chapter is still working on hiring the ex. director position but they haven't forgot about me.

What I'm proposing is a days blitz of awareness/ education I'm looking for people from every state every city every province to help. People expect ISA to take care of everything then complain nothing is getting done. So what I want is a day of nation wide attention. I'm looking for volunteers to do radio talk shows in there area, magazine articles, newspapers, even in just your little rural town play favorites go to your kids school for an assembly, they are the next generation of HO, university guest lecturer. Anything you can think of let me know.

Now its on paper with a date so wether you pity the weekend warriors, laugh at them, avoid them this is our chance to educate the public and hopefully have it be an annual event. Everyone of you knows this is good for our industry and there's no reason we should get our points out there.

Whether you talk about the benefits of certs. and insurance, greening our future, why safety and saftey factors must be used anything you want/know.

Last point is a reminder token whether its for a city/ town, a school, a retirement home, charity house plant a tree. Any size any species you want
but a lesson with a legacy is what the general public need.

Working on a radio ad does anyone know any nice way to say hire an arborist let tom dick and harry cut the grass kinda thing?

You may want to suggest T,D or H paint just so you don't alienate a lot of potential clients. Unless of course you don't get any work through landscapers.

Though I do understand where you're going with the line.

How about:

"Maybe any Tom, Dick or Harry can cut your grass. But, when it comes to your trees, hire a pro. Hire a Certified Arborist."
