Climbing the honey tree

AMAZING! This is truly a lost art. I asked about indigenous tree climbing techniques when I was in interior Borneo, and everyone said the only folks who still knew how were too old to do it anymore.

I've seen documentaries showing other indigenous men weaving homemade bee suits before climbing. Still got lots and lots of stings. Really gives you a feel for the privileged environment in which we live.

Tete's got cooler trees than most of us though.

Unbelievably stupid and backward. F*cking kids are starving, getting stung in the face trying to get some calories; Dads are up there falling to their deaths trying to get some goddamned honey out of a tree . . .

Cultural relativism at its finest. Dude goes barefoot with a ragged vine and a burning bush and it's great. Guy posts a video on Treebuzz and he isn't wearing safety glasses, and then we act like the whole industry just went back to the stone age.

What it boils down to is doing what it takes to get it done, in a 3rd world country. Dude has balls bigger than me and anyone else on this site. Is it stupid, to the trained climber sure, but to the hungry? It looked as if there were a cliff rite beside him. How did the camera man get up there? I would almost be willing to send an extra saddle and rope to him.

wow. that is amazing, some extreme limbwalking! makes me think twice about all the fancy gadgets and gear that everyone "has to have" if some guy can go and do that..

Yeah, I think after he got the honey he did a crown reduction with the machete and that vine, but they didn't show that part. Really makes you think about what safety gear is actually needed, eh? Maybe none?
