Climbing Manual

The only time in my mind it can be useful is if you drop both your prussiks and all your biners unabling you to descend. Thats a lottery chance.

Good one Svein! That's how I feel.

I have one question concerning "cinching knots." Are these knots being recommended to connect the running line to the carabineer or D-ring on the saddle?

This would be in place of the bowline, etc. I assume...

Thanks,
Travis

Travis, yes. as an absolute basic i stand by my comment to teach them a 4 wrap (english prussic) it CAN be tied with the tail of the rope with a stopper knot just like a blakes or tautline.

If tied with a prussic loop it cant roll out, and is very hard to tie wrong, both traits of a blakes and a taughtline i believe.

I stand by my comments that a bowline, Prussic and a figure * are the basics then introduce split tails, prussic loops and carabiners.

Make sure that they know climbing knots inside out before they leave the ground. 10foot (or higher) up is nowhere to find out that you cant tie a bowline.

Once you have mastered basic movement then move onto other knots that allow for easier and faster movement.

I would only use on carabiners. Too hard to untie on a D or solid ring.

Louie have you read the Campana book? It's on my shelf but I haven't read it. the Legends of Arboriculture video is fun to see imo. I dunno if Don's got another book in him, tho he did write a nice piece on shigo. Would Don try to reinvent Campana's wheel?

I have not heard of the Campana book. I looked for it
on some suppliers' websites. Sounds like it is a good
book. Could we have more details?
