Climbers and Crew Leaders Hiring Feedback

For those full time climbers (not business owners) with Climbing Arborist Cert. and couple years of work under your belt -

What are the top three things you want in a good company to be your employer? Culture is the biggest reason we attain and retain but I'm curious what things drive you to look for a new place and what top three things you're looking for.

Concentration of talent (so technical duties don’t always fall on the same few), and culture. Are people happy? Growing? Do they feel free to pursue personal success within and outside of the company?

Jonericchop, what are the defining traits of your company culture? What would your team say keeps them there?

I haven't moved around much, nor do I have the cert, but I do have 10 years in, 8+ of which are at the same company.

Reasons I've stayed and what i'll look for when I move on:
-Less involved owners, they're still around managing stuff in the office, and still assign and follow up on work orders, but they don't hound you out in the field (they'll stop in on highly sensitive clients, otherwise they come visit ~monthly to see how it's going)
-Wide and deep top tier talent pool, Some of us are awesome removal guys, some really good at spikeless pruning, some are fantastic at ornamentals and shrubs and work gets divided accordingly, but if you're getting burnt out there are enough others to swap with for a while and do something different
-Advancement within the company, started as a ground hand, now I'm a senior foremen, and there has been talk of a GF/training type position at some point in the future, with matching increases in pay based on increased responsibility
-Vacation Time: No one gives me a hard time if I want to take a week or 2 off in the middle of the busy season since there's enough man power to keep the work flowing, same goes with other crew members and even bosses, we can continue to function with a couple of key people missing

Somethings I would look for in addition to these if i move
Training- not that we do a bad job where I'm at, but I'd like an advanced tier for more senior guys to discuss and get experience with advanced techniques, new equipment training, etc.

Culture is something that's important, however given the above, I don't see a company with a less than friendly group of employees having all of those options

Thanks for your thoughts! I asked some of our team what they would tell a prospective hire about us. Great culture, high potential for growth, enjoy problem solving and having all the tools to do so from TreeMek to telescoping hand pruners.

More on the culture. We have two mantras. The business is for others...our families, teams, clients, and charitable stuff..not for the owners ; It’s just ours to steward. And for the second, we only drink good beer. So far we’ve hired for personality and character and then figured out which role best suits and trained and equipped for that. It’s been very rewarding going about it this way but as we scale a little more we’re hiring more experienced guys which means we’re looking for skill and character fit.

1. Pay/Benefits/PTO
Are the lowest groundsman being paid a livable wage according to our areas cost of living? Will I have the healthcare that my family and I need? Will I have time off to spend with my family while still providing? Is the owner taking off 2 weeks for Christmas while we scramble for money?

2. A culture of positivity, Innovation & Mentorship.
Is the leadership hazing the fuck of of the new guys? Are the Egos out of control? Is the company down with trying new techniques and technology? Do I see people being taught the job above them?

3. Full time work
