chip bags

What are the dimensions of the bags and what type of material did you make them out of? Also I'm assuming that you had the stand for them made?

once you go big and see how fast stuff gets done, it's hard to go back the other way.

Keep up the good ideas.

Your "tool box" and whole miniture set up is pretty cute/cool.

You remind me of one of those guys with a small Johnson who drive huge 4X4 pickup trucks to compensate.

Is that slander?

Interesting concept and execution.

I've got a 34.5 inch wide Boxer 320 and have pondered a small chipper that I could carry into a back yard on forks. Chipping into bags that could be hauled out when the chips don't stay would be handy. So far I've not seen a chipper that looks like it would work for what I'm considering. I want at least 15 to 20 hp as it's not going to be much of a time saver otherwise. My Bandit 250 is 116hp and of course there are a lot of places it wont fit.

They sell 6" 3pt chippers for less than $2K. They weight 800lbs. Add a $1K 25hp kohler. For less than $4K one could fab up a two wheel chipper cart that attaches to the front of a mini skid steer.

I got the idea from the mini skid steer stump grinders folks fab up with a stand alone motor and stand that just gets moved around with the mini.

Coincidently I just came back from a local trade show this weekend and one of the exhibitors had bags similar to what you have. They are from Pa. and were advertising them to hold one face cord of wood. Carrying weight over 2000# with 4 straps on top. Price was around $10 per bag. Their web site is dinobags.com

It would be worth it to talk to DAVE About that idea, I'm sure he could put something together.

I stated that earlier in the thread, they are made from some type of heavy duty treated canvas.

The stand was made by my welder guy, it's a very simple set-up, do you need more pics?

I'll call the guy that made the bags tommorrow and give you guys more specifics on the material.

Look into that dinobag website though, they may be on to something.

I think we made the bags 4 x 4 x 4 but I'll get some measurements for you.

I like the deflector extension. Right now I'm in the middle of a job with chips left on site. That defector idea can make it easier to get the chips into one central pile with less overspray.

Thanks for that idea.

Sometimes I'll chip some things right into a large, rolling yardwaste can (english holly--invasive). This deflector extension would help with this.

As well, if someone doesn't feel like paying, we could sneak the deflector extension into an open car or house window when nobody is home, and return the favor. I've never had a no-pay customer, so its just a funny thing for me to think about. Imagine shoveling the chips out of the dump truck into the chipper and returning 10 yards of chips to the kitchen.

The deflector is made out of some galvanized stove pipe. I liked the idea of it because you can turn the elbow pieces to direct where you want to blow the chips. It's temporary though, the seams at the elbow aren't strong enough. When chipping bigger wood I blew the end piece apart, I was able to fit it back together though. It gets me by if I'm careful.

Having the ability to accurately aim chip blast would be like a kid playing with his first paintball gun or a recruit's first try with a .50

Doesn't the new (V)BC1000 come with a joystick to control the chute? Man, would that be a fun mess.

Catchin' the chips is a good idea Jim. I was wondering if burlap woolsacks could be tied to the chute, aimed down. Wild Cherry are too good a chip to waste or even dumped somewhere someone would only compost them. Walnut are gourmet, used in small quantities by discerning herbalists...could sell them by the bag - if they were bagged that easy. Red cedar, sassafras, the list goes on.

Good for you.

ha ha.

I generally don't talk about the big equipment.

I agree with the statements about the people that talk big, aren't big at all.

That picture I posted was done because of a new employee this year said, that it was the biggest chip truck and chipper combo that he had ever worked with an he wanted a picture of him standing next to it. He said it reminded him of those Big Johnson shirts that used to be around.

So, before I e-mailed the picture to him, I added his Big Johnson theme to the picture.

Anyway, what am I doing explaining it to you guys... what do I care.

Back to this post. I think it is a decent idea honestly. Being a smaller operation with no big equipment payments sure has it's advantages. Way less stress and you actually probably clear more profit than I do. Just about all our income goes to equipemnt/truck payments, insurance and payroll, all I get is a lot of stress and a hard homelife.

I'd like to scale down sometimes. I think it just may be hard adjusting to getting things done slower.

Frashdog. Who makes the chipper?

I'm currently in the market for a small chipper.

Many models out there. Bay is good place to see a few types. These are pto jobbies you'd have to mate/fab to a stand alone power unit and frame/cart assembly. Most of the 6" chippers models seem to do just fine w/25hp. Two types out there. Ones with feed roller and w/out feed rollers. Obviously feed rollers are heavier, but not bad I guess if building a "cart", maybe with a hydraulic hitch/link that allows turning or steering the two wheeled chipper assembly being pushed by the mini. Heck throw a 4500lb venom atv winch on there for like $300. Get way crazy and make the chipper cart's wheels powered with hydraulic motors. A 6x6 articulating mini chipper jobbie. My buddy who works with a 6" pto chipper says he's got a variable flow control valve for his feed rollers that you adjust per wood diameter to make it real nice.

As far as power units. Kohler 25hp seems to be the cheapest most common. Seen them as low as $600. MSRP bout $1600+? Next is the 27hp model. IIRC msrp is around $2k? Seen them way less.

As far as real deal towable 6" chippers. The bandit 65 w/35hp wisconsin and w/no auto feed hands down out performed the vermeer whatever 6" with 25hp kohler w/auto feed.

Yeah oakie I think you guys may really be on to something. It may be worth looking into for the small operator, maybe even the bigger guys. The burlap type bag is a good idea because it would self vent. The top could be sealed right to the shoot, surely you could hang 50 lbs. from it. We have quite a market here for colored mulch. Smokings chips could get to be a big deal. We have a great local BBQ place here, I'm going to give him a call and see what he thinks.

It's all good X, one thing we all have in common is working as efficiently as possible. That gives us the edge on our competition. You're set up for volume, a great plan if you got the work but man it's getting harder around here to score a job. Good luck to you.

Some type of hopper set up on a self propelled chipper would be awesome.

Bob at Woodsman was looking into doing something like that. He had some great ideas.

You guy's seen these ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOF0xVnSaKI I like the shoot idea for my chipper.

Good stuff guys, keep it coming...

How are those transported? Are they driven onto a trailer or towable on those wheels in Neutral? I've seen some newer track mounted chippers that I'm sure need to be trailered (or maybe towed at 3 MPH).
