check out this weird growth

I just noticed yesterday that I have a few weird growths like this on a smoke bush at my house! I topped the bush about 4 years ago since it is right below my flag pole and was getting too tall. I was checking it out yesterday because I have to trim it again and noticed a few of these types of strange growths. I will have to get some pics and try to post them here.

Twisted Twig

Here's one of the more cool looking ones I found a few years ago on a flowering cherry tree near downtown Portland.

This is a white pine in a plantation. 12" DBH. Spiral happens at 15 feet from ground.
Is this possibly the same sort of damage by bacteria when the tree was younger, or do you think it is more from physical damage?

Chep- that type of growth was likely due to some damage (i.e. physical, ice, etc.) of its apical bud.
Fasciation is usually flat, not just curled, and carries multiple stem tissue.
Again, like Guy said, trees do amazing things to survive.

If I remember to do it, I will photograph a redwood I worked next to today. This tree is perhaps 90' tall, and at one point had 3 separate leads. All 3 fused together (barley noticeable, unless you are an arborist) and became one, strong central leader. Wild
