Charlotte's OPEN INTERNATIONAL INVITATIONAL TCC

Re: Charlotte\'s OPEN INTERNATIONAL INVITATIONAL TCC

Well CAA once again willing to shake things up again. Besides allow new gear, new techniques, they did what instructors have been saying for years. They made the AR real. As we are taught as tree professionals to not be EMS techs, the event was based on not bringing the victim down. Reason being EMS did not arrive, victim was unconscious from a head injury.
At first I was a little upset that it seemed we were tricked and valuable points lost. But after sleeping on it I feel this had to be done and why not here. Honestly it was the same across the board so no one competitor made out with the points. It might just wake some of us up, and re invent the AR event. It really should not be a race event or it should not implicate tree guys as EMS techs.
Tough love hurts but helps

If my buddy is unconscious in a tree with a head injury, why would I wait for EMTs to get there to "allow" me to bring him down? BS.

I heard that Josie even asked the Judges if she should bring the dummy down. She was told "Yes." WTF?

Re: Charlotte\'s OPEN INTERNATIONAL INVITATIONAL TCC

KS,

What is the proper procedure for transporting a victim who
Has suffered a major trauma? Find out what is recommended in a real rope rescue situation.

Unless the rescue climber has proper training for neck brace/ body stabilizing every FA class that I've taken says that the victim should not be moved.

Don't believe all of the rumors that you here about the event.

Re: Charlotte\'s OPEN INTERNATIONAL INVITATIONAL TCC

Tom,
True enough. There is always more than one side to any tale. I've never had any formal first responder training that had to do with high angle rescue. Certainly seems counter to my common sense, but I'm no expert.

What about Josie? Did you see her AR? I heard she won the AR for women and men?

Josie had the best AR of the day, based on how we were judging.

Like Ary, it took me a night of sleeping on it before I was ok with this change in scoring that was not communicated. Thankfully everyone vrought the dummy down, and were scored accordingly.

Josie insisted that she didn't want to bring the victim down, but she was instructed by the ground tech to bring the victim down (a clear error in the logistical setup of the event - the ground tech was unaware of the true aims of the AR scenario.).

In any case, this was a top notch TCC, and I'm happy I was a part of it.

That must have been a difficult moment for those of you that knew the deal.

In any event, I applaud you for shaking things up a bit and being real.

Re: Charlotte\'s OPEN INTERNATIONAL INVITATIONAL T

Just saw the local news coverage of the Charlotte event. I attended most of Sat. and for several hours this afternoon. Congratulations to all, it was an interesting event and I enjoyed meeting several of the participants. Sat. was overcast and cool, perfect for the climbers. Saw a part of the masters challenge and got to see Kevin being interviewed and showing his rope wrench with the stiff aluminum tether. Also met Paul Cox who demonstrated his hitch hiker midline friction device, below the hitch, very neat device. The various ascent systems were fun to see and the foot lockers were amazing. The competitor with the big shot I saw, nailed his launch at the very top crotch of the tree. Most of the hand launchers were impressively accurate on the throws also. Who won the raffle for tree gear?

Congrats to everyone that was involved with the comp it was a great time. The open ascent event was fun I really enjoyed it, I hope it becomes a permanent part of the event.

Re: Charlotte\'s OPEN INTERNATIONAL INVITATIONAL T

Thanks to all of the Techs, Judges, Volunteers, and all who made this TCC happen !!

Congrats to Jo, Kevin, and all of the climbers who put on such a great display of climbing !

Re: AR event

The climbers were told that the groundie saw theclimber swing and hit the trunk. The groundie couldnt do a proper victim assessment. The rescue climber is the one who would need to make the judgement call about transport because they have more info. Whats the first aid training of the groundie? Whats the training level of the rescuer?

Endangering the victim even more is not good porcedure. The victim was unconscious with stable ABCs. There was no compelling reason to transport especially with the lack of training by the climber.

I like the idea of incorporating more realism into the AR, but I wonder if the response to "...talk to the EMT's on the phone, let them know the climber took a big swing and fall and may have sustained major injuries...Do they want me to take the climber down?"...would be "... do what you feel is best.."

Had any of the climbers who mentioned something similar to the above question (quite a few in our group) received the potentially more accurate response of "..EMT's do NOT want you to move the victim.." it would certainly have thrown quite a wrench into the scores for the rest of the day.....

Re: Charlotte\'s OPEN INTERNATIONAL INVITATIONAL TCC

Beautiful park, amazing trees, awesome climbers, CAA = First class event. I even got to work the notorious AR event. What more could you ask for? ( maybe a drill for the GRCS, what you think SZ?). Had a great time and will be back. Thanks for the hospitality Scotty Olson. You da man!

Re: Charlotte\'s OPEN INTERNATIONAL INVITATIONAL TCC

Also had a great time except for a bad oyster that went marching through Georgia at about 3:30 AM Sunday. Scotty, awesome job of putting it together, count me in next year! Rich H. we still need to complete our conversation on E2E prusick's. Congrats to all who were involved. Stay safe and see you next year.
