I prefer protective pants when I wear them climbing, but chaps are a must for me too. I love them in the heat. You can throw them on for some felling and then loose them to load the wood or whatever. Very good feature. Also cool for the snow. Wear them for extra heat and to keep dry then chuck them when it's time for lunch in the truck.

For removals, definitely. On some pruning jobs when you may only need a chainsaw once or twice then I leave em on the ground. Due to positioning it sometimes seems just as likely to cut an arm, shoulder, neck, foot, or anything including legs. I wonder how many of us are wearing kevlar torso protection? how about boots? gloves?

Talking about safe climbin.....

I don't understand how everyone in the states is so obsessed about ANSI and saftey and what have you, and it seems to be the norm NOT to wear chainsaw protection when climbing..... whazzzz up??!!

with the new balistik material down to 6 layers, its not that bulky....

No chaps for me thanks. I'll wear them on the ground because it's mandated, otherwise, I'd wear them as I felt it was necessary.

The day that OSHA makes chaps a requirement for climbers I'll find another trade.

In the summer I would rather wear chaps there cooler
( Only Chaps that is )Got to love that cool breeze!!!....No Seriously My name ain't the Duke so its Chainsaw trousers for me.Mind you chaps offer more protection than chainsaw "pants"..

Didj Ha deeha dee ha????

"The correct protective clothing"

and who's to say what that is? At what point is it enough? Gloves, chaps, hard hat, ear plugs, safety glasses, protective shoes.....maybe it's the worker thats lacking, not the clothes.
Ever lived in the states? Letting the lawyers and insurance companies mandate our lives has made for some unpleasant consequences.

Maybe this vote should have been for any protective covering including pants versus no protection at all, cus there's some confusion. Some guys seem to like pants but not Chaps. That's where I fall. My comment was strictly a NO vote about CHAPS, not a vote on protective pants. There's a big difference, I think, considering the new materials for pants. So, for instance, I will wear protective pants that are flexible and not too hot--but not the Chaps until they improve their material. Unless maybe I'm just not aware of some newer changes in Chap material.
So yes we in America are concerned about safety as we all should be, but we don't have to compromise our climbing ability with obstructive Chaps, therefore also threatening our climbing safety, especially when there's other alternatives out there, like flexible protective pants, which are just as safe and doesn't compromise climbing safety either.
