the purpose of this post is to gather ideas and opinions on what should and should not be included in a beginners chainsaw maintenance course. are there any comprehensive video/dvd/cd rom that could be used in a course and built upon to train an employee to be safer, more productive, and more responsible with high end production chainsaws. thanks in advance for any input

Off the top of my head...

Chain sharpening & replacement
Bar dressing
Air filter cleaning & replacement
Sprocket replacement
Spark plug replacement
General cleaning
Fueling (& using the proper mix) and oiling - and getting the caps back on right!

That's about it for beginners, I'd say. Don't know about a DVD, though

I second Jack's suggestion. We use the same video as part of our orientation training although I think it's a little overwhelming for beginners. It's about an hour long but chock full o' chainsaw wisdom.

It should be noted that the video is in chapters and can be shown in parts as needed to fit the curriculum.

Speaking of Tim Ard, I saw him last week on an episode of "This Old House" with Roger Cook doing some chainsaw safety and stuff. Good to see him as I know he had a health issue to battle a bit ago.
