A big thank you to all of our sponsors! This year, we raised close to $20,000 in combined cash and merchandise, all of which we rely on to put on the world's best TCC! This year, with all of the worries about the economy, it says a lot about our sponsors and the CAA TCC planning committee for keeping the goal ahead of them, and not settling for second-best.
The first CAA TCC was held in February 2002, and there was snow on the ground. We had 13 climbers, and I was competing. I finished dead last. We had a Masters Challenge and were all done by 3PM. We probably had $2,000 worth of prizes to give away.
3 years ago, after having the competition in the same park for three years in a row, and believe me, those trees were tired of it, we moved the event into the heart of town.
I assumed the role of Chair for the 2007 CAA TCC. I challenged a group of CAA Board Members to step up and take our TCC to the next level. With the help of that planning committee, we set out to show the world what we could do! With the help of Treebuzz, help for running our TCC poured in from Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Georgia, and the list went on.
Last year, we secured our current TCC location. Freedom Park, located between Meyers Park and Dilworth, the mecca of urban greenspace. We raised more funds and got more prizes than we ever could have dreamed, and we gave it all back to the climbers. The climbers are the stars of this show.
What makes me so proud of this event is seeing it go from a weakly attended exhibition in the snow, to an event that draws the current ITCC Women's Champion to want to compete....well, that is saying something. And all in just 7 short years.
I'll be around to watch this thing grow into the World's Open Tree Climbing Championship, with thousands of dollars in prize money to give away.
It's all about the climbing.
