buying business

If your serious you might as well take the ph#(not the name). It might take a year or so for his current advertising to run out and if he has done some good work in the past that ph# and biz card is sitting in someones phone list. Those few phone calls you get could pay for a good porion of that equipement.

Not sure the value of the equipement, but the ph# and equipement for 35000 doesn't sound way off. Take a good look at it and through him a offer if you serious.

If your already established I wouldn't take the name.

Don't really know. Not enough information.

I'd rather look at their P&L for the whole time they have been in business. It would tell alot about the business.

The fact they are going out of business means that the tree service market just got a little larger for other tree companies. This means that adopting their name may not really be that important because they are one less contender.

I already have my own business in a different location so I am not interested so much in how they did as a business and I will not use their name and #. I would repaint the truck. The price just jumped out at me for the equipment listed. It seemed like something worth looking into just for the equipment.

Thats a pretty good deal, i would buy it and keep the phone number. Heck if you get $15k in jobs from it you made out pretty good, and im sure that you will get work from it. Judging by the email in the listing they own a seal coating company and did tree work on the side...? But i would buy it!

It's worth getting the customer list and number if you're planning on expanding to the area he worked. If not, then the price for the gear isn't too bad. Definitely worth a look and offer. However, do have a look at the customer base to see what it's value is then discount your offer by that much. Conversely you could by the whole thing then selling the customer list and number to a local competitor. Much alike to buying a mailing list.

Thanks for the feedback. After much thought I have decided to stick with my not as big and not as new stuff for at least another year. I was really tempted to bite the bullet but for right now I like not owing any money.
If anyone is interested in the equipment it is still for sale and I got the seller down to 30 thousand for the package. Still a great deal for someone.

Maybe in a year or two I will be ready to upgrade.

I understand your point... And I'm not running down your decision. I just want to throw something out there.

My observation/experience with running a business with beater trucks was this: while working on job sites hardly anyone ever came up to us to ask for a card or estimate. But, when I got newer looking (and clean) trucks, we frequently get people asking for a card or estimate.

With that said, even though it sucks making payments on newer stuff, there are other "kick backs" you can expect for newer/nicer looking vehicles.

If I didn't want to hear others opinions (good or bad) I wouldn't ask. I appreciate hearing every thought possible.

And I never said my current truck was a beater......just not as new or big as the other one.
