\'Bull Buck\' Giant Sequoia climb

Here's a pic of Steven Barry & myself in a 27' dbh Sequoiadendron giganteum called the 'Bull Buck'. This was the champion sequoia until the General Sherman tree was discovered. Two separate groups climbed the 'Bull Buck' on consecutive Saturdays in the summer of 2003.

Click on the above attachment for a zoom view.

Pics of other climbs in smaller trees in the same grove are on my website in the 'Yosemite' section. Enjoy!

Here's an attachment of a shot of Steven Barry at about 130', where our crossbow bolt set the line for us. Photo is from the ground by Barry Middleton.

Another attachment of a shot of Steven on rope at the base of the Bull Buck. Photo by Barry Middleton.

Some folks think these pics are 'doctored'.

Stay tuned for the DVD of this tree. Whoa!! Just tossed a rock at the hornet's nest!

Arboreally yours,

Ox

Looking thru old videos, I ran across the attachment photo of this climb in the Bull Buck.

This never seen before screenshot was able to be captured by converting the video image to an SD chip in the camcorder.

The camera was on a tripod next to this twenty seven footer. I was all alone out in the woods.

A video of climbers in this tree the previous week is available at: A Tree Story.

Helping to get the rope ready by paying out the 400' throwline is Steven Barry, on the left.

On the right, I'm reeling in the 20 lb micro-dyneema fishing line with the Mitchell 300 reel mounted on the Barnett crossbow.

The next step was to pull the 11mm static line up & over the 130' high limb. We tied off one end of the rope to that little cedar tree on the left.

Then, Steven went back to camp to get more gear, while I just started ascending up the free hanging side of the jug line.
