Buckingham gaffs

once I have money I will upgrade my harness, I run a black diamond rock harness, not great by any means but it works,
my local ace co-op sells climbing gear, they have some (what looks to be) the lower end weaver harnesses, anyone use those? how is the leg circulation compared to say a sequoia or a treemotion?

The other lower straps are really durable and work fine too. Just that you may find them a tiny bit too tight or too loose and can poke another hole in between two existing holes if you want. The Velcro are perfect fit every time and 1/2 inch wider strap too, so spreads the pressure out on a little bigger surface.
They also sell ones that have a quick release buckle, like a cobra buckle. I don’t really see how that’s much improvement and they’re pretty expensive, but I’ve also not tried them. The plain old cinching Velcro ones are plenty fast anyways.

The only other spurs I’ve used before were a pair of Buckingham steel spurs with permanent gaffs, and I used a colleague’s climb rights with pole gaffs once. The climb right’s were super janky... and the steel bucks had been abused over many years by many different climbers.

Comparing them to those two, I love the buckalloys, but I also may be biased since they’re my own personal spurs that I purchased and solely use. They’re nice and light and comfortable and I can’t really say I have any complaints. I run them with wrap pads with the steel plate inside (not the cinching ones) and regular nybuck lower straps. I just purchased some Velcro lowers that I’m about to put on them... stoked to give those a go.
I am working with a crew right now and most of the fellas are climbing on BuckAlloys so I have logged quite a few hours on them in the last few months...They are very nice spurs with some great design ideas...The hybrid tree gaff is really nice in second growth Reds and Firs, but when I put some shortys on them for a few madrone removals they felt strange as the gaff was a little to far up the shank for my liking. You will love the Velcro lowers and will have a hard time ever going back to nybuck lowers.

one thing I learned within a few minutes of using the spurrs, GET TALL BOOTS, lower strap slid up right onto the back of my ankle, dont do that, you will probably get laughed at

A saddle fit is a very personal thing, what some people love you might hate, and vice versa. I run a Buckingham 4 D saddle. They aren’t super expensive and for what I do it works well. I do mostly removals in larger hardwoods so I’m climbing on spurs and flip line with a ddrt life linehooked to the bottom set of D’s. If your starting out with basically no money then a weaver is gonna be much closer your budget than the higher end stuff. It probably won’t be as comfortable but it’ll be much better for climbing than your current rock harness

Tall boots with logger style heels and stout arch support are a must for me in spikes. I wear Whites Smoke Jumpers, they aren’t cheap but I’m also not half crippled after cutting in the tree and on the ground for 14 hours. Keep an eye on Facebook and Craigslist and you might find a lightly used pair of logging boots for a decent price that will make your time in gaffs much more enjoyable

I have a pair my moms friend gave me, they work alright, did a little spurr climbing on some small stuff ( about 6-8 inch at the base), some scary crap, having to put one spike OVER the other, not fun

Go slow on spikes. And make sure they are set up right. Pads in the right spot, spikes on the right feet, well sharpened, etc. I saw in another post you’re from East Tennessee. What area? I’m from Oliver Springs, I might have some gear I don’t use that I could pass on. I’ll have to dig around in my spares bag

Let me see what I can dig up to send your way. And btw. Mommas don’t ever stop worry. I’m 33 with a wife and 2 kids, been deployed 3 times in the Marines and my mom still gets nervous watching videos of me climb, especially if it’s a nasty tree.

you got that right on moms always worrying, and also thank you for your service.

Or young grasshopper could become a truly well rounded climber and become extremely efficient at both... Just a thought..
im trying lol, I run ddrt, and spikes, pretty good on ddrt, spikes have one heck of a learning curve tho

Then keep up the work. Use the right tool for for the right job. If all you have in your mental tool box is a hammer, every problem is gunna look like a nail.

Tony
I would agree, one of my best skills is problem solving, that goes hand in hand with fixing broke stuff, they work well
