Bucket truck

How does one of those compare to the similar Altec model, do you have any Altec experience?

It probably depends which boom you are specifically looking at but when I did my research earlier this year before buying my bucket the ALC's had the worst over center capabilities. Yes, their bottom boom had more articulation than others but their upper boom was FAR less than a LRIII or Highranger XT. And last I talked to the ALC shop they weren't going out of business. Said they'd just been bought out and filing bankruptcy was part of the purchase agreement.

How many crews does Marquis run?
Most of the 75'ers around here are used by companies that run 5+ crews, maybe (2) 75' buckets, one or two smaller buckets, and a couple of climbing crews.. You don't need 75' on every job.. Nice to keep them working everyday though.. and the bigger outfits can share them amonst the climbers to keep anyone from getting burned out climbing big trees 5-6 days/week..

Altec bought the rights to supply the parts for ALOC, they will not be making any of their booms, That antiquated design has finally been put to rest.
We have been happy with our Terex highrangers but Altec has gone to such amazing lengths to make sure we are 100% satisfied with our crane that we have decided that our next bucket truck is going to be an Altec.

The Allwheel drive 75' rear mount in the picture was around $165,000 2 years ago

Love Altec booms, very smooth, round upper boom allows branches to slide on and off easier, elevator integrated into joystick (no separate lever to pull), allows using the elevator and a separate action same time (terex does not)

Altec mounts their elevators across the whole bed which leaves no room to store ballcart, mats, etc.....sux!

thanks for the info marquis we have a 55ft overcenter and a 70ft conventional style both rearmounts. it would be nice to have the best of both worlds in 1 truck.

Once you get used to a knuckle boom with a man basket and a fly jib with extensions, you won't want a bucket......except for line clearance. How does 120 ft of side reach sound?

That's what I'm saying! I don't own a K-boom, but I see the need for tree companies to use them. It surprises me that many larger tree companies don't have them.

For the money, a smaller K-boom would be much more versatile than an expensive bucket. For the price of Marquis' bucket, a K-boom with 75' side reach could be bought and mounted on a used truck.

I'm not saying Marquis' purchase is a bad one, he's got a nice operation going. He knows how to run a nice operation. It looks like he can buy stuff like that (he's in a better market). But, for other tree companies that don't have such a good market, the more versatile the machine, the more profitable it would be.

And that's where I'm putting my dollars. K-boom.

Jamie,
I am not saying that I have drank the k boom coolaid yet but I am going to take a good look at them, Art from smith cranes was just telling of a new unit that has 165' of horizontal reach.

I don't see us ever using k booms to replace bucket trucks, the dielectric issue is huge, it seems everyday our crews are working in and around power everyday. Another advantage to the Buckets is the simplicity of them.

If you are running one crew and want one truck that can do everything k booms seem very slick in that application. It seems that a k boom needs to be in the owners hands at all times, not the kind of unit you want to send out with many people.

Someone needs to invent a laser that can make huge flushcuts in seconds, I have had way too much time to post today waiting on large wood cuts

You guys probably do this already on large wood cuts when working from a bucket; cut 70% or so of the next pick while the last pick is floating away and being landed.

"That antiquated design" is straight legendary for simplicity, durability, toughness, reliability, and productivity for 55'-62' lifts, imho. It's been around since early 1960's for a reason. That the company went out of business due to family problems is an absolute shame.

I'm have no doubt your Terex is a sweet machine, I'm just sayin the ALC is awesome in it's own right, too.

And Rich Mitchell, formerly of ALC and now with Altec, provided the same superb customer service at ALC that you are now experiencing with Altec.

I agree with your points. They aren't for every outfit.

Where I'm at geographically and company size-wise, one would be perfect. It would help us in many ways.

Lasers!
