Bolt or cable

I have done more cabling than bolting myself, but I'm wondering the main deciding factors you guys use when recommending a support system.

I know there is lots of debate over steel vs cobra cable but how about bolts vs cables in general?

I've heard/ read 2 schools of thought on bolting as well, when using more than 1 bolt

1. you put them in a straight row to help the tree flex and twist more naturally.

2. you put 1 in straight and another from about 5:00 to 11:00 and the other from 7:00 to 1:00 through the tree and that helps a split or poor codom with reducing the twist.

Any thoughts on this?

I've done a lot of cabling, but only one bolt. Bolts should never be installed without a cabling system higher then 2/3 above the union of concern. Bolts are a real "pita"! From what I've read they are stalled in a straight row, so that they have the effect of a zipper. (Edit: staggered as to avoid splitting between bolts). But again I've only ever installed one bolt. Cobra or other synthetic cable would not be appropriate for a tree with a compromised union.

That zipper function makes sense

Kevin, some trees need one, some need more. Over generalizing can be misleading, such as...2/3 is often not an attainable height.

Yes it can be very cool to see a crack zip closed as you turn the wrench!

The A300 standard isn't much help; the BMP is better but it too calls for overkill on size and # of bolts.
