I see what you did, making use of what is handy. I just don't have a lot of extra toy's yet and looking to make your idea feasible for me on the cheap. To do it on the cheap, I believe you could make this system with a couple of knots in the end of your rigging rope to replace the entire system. Your only expense would be the carabiner which you likely own and the hook. Which I believe I paid less than $4 for.
Keep in mind that I have not actually tried this, but an alpine butterfly for the carabiner/hook, another alpine butterfly about 2 feet away to replace the steel ring, and then a bowline on the end to replace the webbing strap. You will need to test it out at ground level at first to make sure the location of all if your knots work together.
