That is geniusWell when the customer wants something for nothing or wants something ridiculous our guy in the sky keeps a few pics of nest up in the tree (squirrel-raccoon-bird) he has been known to show the home owner to get out of doing some dumb or free stuff
Brilliant and kind of embarrassing but it works
I had a sub climber that used to say "Nothing new after 2." if I ever tried to pull anything like that on him. I got a pretty good kick out of thatIt’s 3:30 in the afternoon, you’ve been climbing all day, and just spill out of your spurs and saddle…. Boss: Ah I’ve got “quick” takedown just down the street…..
Columbus never made it to the mainland so technically...Customer boasting about his white pine: "That tree was here before Columbus"![]()
In my experience, bad shit happens on these, “oh we can squeeze that in” jobs. I’ll have to remember your climbers phrase. To me, it’s comparable to hitting a false summit on a mountain, you think you’ve peaked out, but you haven’t, you hit the finish line, but have to continue on…. It’s such a kick in the nuts.I had a sub climber that used to say "Nothing new after 2." if I ever tried to pull anything like that on him. I got a pretty good kick out of that
35 years ago an arborist told my parents to cut down a pignut hickory that ‘shoulda been cut down 30 years ago!’ Still enjoying the shade of those trees whenever I visit. 65 years past due for removal! When the neighbors tree guy tells my client that her oak is dying and should come down. (This particular oak happens to be blocking the neighbor’s view of the ocean).
Truth-The oak is not dying. Actually it’s in excellent condition. 15 year later it’s still in excellent condition!
He must have been base jumping.Roll up on a jobsite where we’re taking out 60ish foot ponderosa pine. Homeowner steps out and yells to us, “I’d be doing it cept the wife won’t let me on account of I almost died falling 200’ out of a tree 20 some years ago!! But I’ll let you fellas do it!!”
I think he was free-basing.He must have been base jumping.
I learned to never let the customer dictate my prices. I would rather do one job for a really good pay/profit than 5 jobs for barely any pay/profit. This was me working for myself, by myself. If I had a crews that I needed to keep busy, I probably wouldn't be as selective with the jobs I took. This right here, 100%. I typically don’t fuck around when someone tries to beat me up on my price, I’ll give them options to save themselves money, but I’m not working for less. I also believe that not every customer chooses the cheapest crew every time.
They don’t dictate the price. If they wanna save money, I’ll give them options to clean/dispose material themselves etc…….I learned to never let the customer dictate my prices. ...don't need a hard hat...
Or...bucket operators don't need to wear hard hats...right?..because I'm the only climber and no one is cutting above me.
