Best Winter Climbing Gloves Question

Re: Best Winter Climbing Gloves Question-bump

I wear these Atlas 370s most of the year. If it gets really cold (not here yet) I'll use the Atlas thermal gloves.

I'd can't hardly climb without these gloves anymore. Like Dumbo's feather.

Re: Best Winter Climbing Gloves Question-bump

They're really thin, giving you more fingertip sensitivity. They actually slide easily along the rope until you grip it, and then they stick. They are Spiderman gloves.

Only bad part is that they start to stink after a few times. Pretty bad at that. Wanna smell my fingers?

Re: Best Winter Climbing Gloves Question-bump

That tells me that they don't breathe any. Do they make your fingers sweat?

Re: Best Winter Climbing Gloves Question-bump

Maybe a bit. I think that the black fabric just holds odors. I run them through the wash occasionally, but not with much success. In the summer months they do feel hot, but what doesn't?

Re: Best Winter Climbing Gloves Question-bump

I really like those nitrile ones for summer climbing. In Winter It is Atlas Therma-Fit all the way-Multiple pairs so that dry ones are always available. I like the fact that the grey latex coated Thermafits are much less prone to peel than the Blue ones and the gloves last for many climbs....But I wish the summer weight blue ones would last like the Therma-its. The Nitrile last best and grip well-but not AS well.

Corey, you like those? I have experienced that they are indeed grippy before usage, but quickly loose their grip when dirty. Especially working in Aspen.

And they smell weird.

They do smell funny.

I just try not to get my hands dirty.

Re: Best Winter Climbing Gloves Question-bump

I wear the Stihl Timber Sports gloves year round. If it is real cold out Ill stick a couple of the hand warmers in my softshell or Arborwear Jacket pockets.

Re: Best Winter Climbing Gloves Question-bump

Well met all. I've been reading the site for the past couple weeks and this is my first posting...hopefully more to follow. Lots of good info so far. Thanks to you all!

I'm a sufferer of cold sweaty hands, so winter is no fun. The best gloves I've found so far are the Atlas ThermaFit, but as with all other gloves they get sweaty after a decent ascent. I do carry a second pair and alternate them, but I'm always looking for a better solution...aside from moving to warmer climes.

I was just checking out the Atlas website. They apparently have a model with Thermolite, its called the Atlas Extreme. Its supposed to stay warmer even when wet. Has anyone seen or tried these?

Merry Christmas to all and safe climbing!

Oakwood

Welcome Oakwood, and Merry Christmas to you!

You know, when I get cold, I just hurry up and finish the sales appointment and get back into my F-150 as quickly as possible and crank up the heat.

Re: Best Winter Climbing Gloves Question-bump

Welcome Oakwood to the buzz, I use the atlas thermals and and sometimes when is really drops temp I use the seal skins gloves. Found those in Gemplers(think the spelling is right).
I found those gloves when dealing with ice storm damage and really cold logging days up in the ADK area. Good comfort till the -20 range.

Re: Best Winter Climbing Gloves Question-bump

Greetings again and thank you for the warm reception.

LOL. I like the running to the truck idea, but otherwise this link should take you to the Atlas Extreme gloves:
http://www.lfsinc.com/outdoor/Extremeoutdoor.html

The font doesn't look quite right, as in when I've seen others post links, but you can at least copy and paste it to get you there. (Willing to receive advice on how better to link to sites.)

As for the seal gloves...tyvm, but when its -20 I'm at home.

Enjoy the day comrades.

One thing I hate about the atlas gloves is sometimes the material gets caught in my climbing knot (VT) and it bugs the hell out of me.

This has happened to me with those as well.
