Best Rope to use to tie your french prusic, Vt or distle hitch

Hey Greg,
Is that the ultra tech with the new purple jacket? I beleive it's 5/16. It's better than the 3/8 white jacket one. I buy it from Sherril unspliced 11$.
So that adress would be cool.
Thats a good rope James, to use. I use it for Swabisch 4up 1down.

Has anyone noticed it is cheaper to buy the ultra tech by the foot. For $10 you get 5 feet and for $11 dolars you get 51 inches and that is just a little over 4 feet. Is that some sort of insult from Sherrill?

The 51" has whipped ends. Gotta pay someone to do it.

Beal's regate with a Petzl fixe.
I often use this set up connected to a flat webbing(instead of connected directly to the harness). The carabiner can be used as a handle and slides easily up the rope.

I've got a piece with those "whipped" ends. The whipped ends have been taped when they cut it and then dipped with a few stitches of thread. I am sure we are capable to of doing this ourselves. The piece I have hasn't been milked out. There is a lot of slack in the cover. Isn't the idea of whipping is so not to get slack in the cover and cause it to puff? Not the the technora core is going to puff anyway.

BigJon- I'm glad you mentioned that about whipping. It usually does majorly help to prevent slack in the cover, however, there is a catch. If there is slack in the cover, and you whip, you are, in a sense, locking in the slack. If you are going to whip it, (WHICH YOU SHOULD with expensive ropes) you should milk the rope hard, get all the excess cover and run it off one end, then cut it right off (in hi-tech cords it only serves to protect the core, so it's ok to cut it off). After you got it milked and trimmed, go ahead and whip it. It keeps things neat in tidy. You will look sharp. There was a cross-country running coach in new york named Coach Jack Daniels (no joke). All his runners HAD to have nice hair cuts. His motto was "look sharp, feel sharp, run sharp."

I think the same applies to climbing.

After only a few weeks of using a split system with a distal hitch instead of a single rope, I am thinking that the only disadvantage of the advanced hitches is the increased wear on the hitch ropes. I could get 6 months on the tail of my lifeline using an open prusik, but I'm seeing disturbing wear in just days now. The soft ropes like Tenex are the absolute worst.

Has anyone experimented with 3/8" rock climbing static rope? It seems like the extremely tight outer core designed to withstand wear and dirt would hold up better than some of the currently available lines from arborist supplies.

Seems like my mind is like a sponge lately. I never thought I would ever be this excited about climbing again. I'm living proof that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

You're on the right track Brian. I've received some new samples of prusik cord that are similar to this. I haven't tried them yet, but the only concerns I have are the lack of flexibility. If you are using a Distel though, you should be able to set it well enough. Hitches like the VT might be a bit of a risk though. I'll let you know how I get on with them when I get home.

Brian,

the link is to the company that Greg gave the phone number, two posts up. If you want more info, it seems like you'll have to get hold of them and order a catalog.

I wanted to send you an email but you must have opted out of that on your profile. Any reason?

Tom
